Title: Drilling for Spare Ball?
Post by: 1MechEng on January 23, 2008, 01:36:01 PM
Question: Is your spare ball drilled the same (with respect to your pitches and spans only) as your strike ball(s)? Do you use grips just like your strike ball(s)?

Why or why not?

Same exact feel as my strike ball.  I release my spare ball like I do my strike ball, but because I've only got a 250rpm rev rate, the plastic spare ball still goes pretty much straight.

On edit, I should mention that my spare ball is only 14lb (I use 15lb normally).  I had to get one in a hurry because I was getting killed in my PBA Experience league trying to make spares without one, and the only 15lb plastic ball the pro shop had in stock that day was bright pink, so I opted for a 14lb dark purple color Ebonite Maxim instead.

My spans and pitches are all the same.  The only difference is my spare ball is 1 pound lighter.

Exact the same as strike balls, including finger and thumb insert for the feel, and 15 lbs. like the rest. I just use 1 tape less under the thumb, but that might be rather for the mind than effective, since I tend to hold onto the spare ball for too long.

Only difference on my spare ball is more left thumb pitch to allow the thumb to exit cleanly while staying behind the ball (right hander).  --  JohnP

Drilled the same...grips and all.
Only difference...one less piece of tape in the back of the thumb hole. I usually throw harder at spares, so I have a tendency to squeeze a little. The slightly larger opening helps when I squeeze, and dropping it short does not hurt me if I don't squeeze. Ah, the joys of throwing plastic hard and straight

I'm the same a novawagonmaster above.  Everything is the same except I like the thumb hole a tad looser.

Mine is same as all of my other equipment, mold used to make thumb, same pitches, tape is the same as other equipment (normally none but that doesn't always work out).

I drilled mine the same because i don't want a different feel out of my spare ball as i do my strike balls. You don't really change anything on drilling your strike balls do you?

Mine's drilled the exact same as my other balls. It doesn't really matter too much in my aspect though because I flatten my hand out to shoot spares.

Seems the concensus is that everyone has it drilled exactly the same as their strike ball.
Thanks to all who responded!

mine is drilled to hook (if ever so slight). i figure maybe if ball has urge to dump off maybe it will hold that extra second. i have finger grips but no thumb slug since it lane 1 clear diamond and looks cool without

The only difference between my spare ball and my strike balls is that i use vinyl in my thumb insert as opposed to urethane in my strike balls.

I'm like the majority of the rest who have replied.  I primarily use 15lb. equipment, but my spare ball is 14lbs.  Similar to Dan Belcher, I picked a 14lb. ball because its all they had that I could get without it being "girly" .  My benchmark ball is already the VBP Violet Gargoyle, I don't need to make it worst!!

Anyway, I formerly had a 16lb plastic and hated it because I wasn't comfortable with it (I thought that on extremely dry lanes an extra pound might help with carry since all the friction from the dry kills the energy the ball stores going down the lane - not good results).  So before I went to JOG in Florida in 2006 I decided to get a new plastic ball and at the time all the pro shop had was an ABS Star Light (light and dark green, and silver swirls) in 14lbs besided a betty boop visa-ball and an elvis visa-ball.  Since using a spare ball a pound lighter I won't ever go back, I slightly muscle from time to time and I get less fatigue when I'm grinding it out and using it alot, plus it gets more deflection than my old one and has helped me in 3-10 and 1, 2, 4, 6, 10 situations.  Much happier with it, and spare game has improved.

Drilled like my Strike ball, but I come out of it flat and thump the thumb hole (Unless I'm using it as a strike ball).

Say John, could you elaborate a little more with details about that left thumb pitch on your spare ball?

My natural arm swing and release is a hook motion - I didn't have to learn it, that's just the way I naturally release it.  I use 1/4 left lateral on my strike balls.  Throwing the ball straight makes me "force" my arm into an unnatural position.  If I don't stay behind the ball on a ten pin, I pull it left every time.  On my spare ball, I use 3/4 left lateral to allow me to release cleanly and stay behind the ball without hanging in the thumb.  With my normal pitch and the "straight" release I tend to hang the thumb.  I use this ball (an old caramel White Dot) for right side spares and my Slate Blue Gargoyle for left side spares.  --  JohnP
