Which is more likely to thump?
« on: April 05, 2006, 05:12:25 AM »
I am a high tracker (PAP: 5.5" over x 1" up), and I find that some balls work fine for me and others I end up nearly full rolling. The drill pattern doesn't seem to competely explain the phenomenon.

There is a lot of discussion concerning the placement of the mass bias on the negative side of the ball, particularly when the core is asymmetric. My question is:

With an asymmetric like the Zone core, which drill is more likely to roll over the thumb/finger holes,

1) pin over the bridge and MB swung back toward the VAL, or
2) pin at ~2" from the PAP and MB directly below the thumb?

In other words, which is more likely to cause thumping, pin near the grip centerline, or mass bias near the grip centerline?

Thanks,
CK

I'm not sure how the MB affects this, but for a high tracker putting the pin below a line from the finger hole to the PAP is quite likely to thump.

Rags,
Yes, that's because the "bowtie" where the flare reverses is normally on a line from the PAP through the pin. If the pin is below the line from PAP to finger holes, then the bowtie can be below the fingers and cause the ball to flare over the fingers.

My issue is somewhat different, and it has to do with where my first ring is, not how the ball flares.

Thanks for the response.

I have a PAP quite close to yours and I have a Absolute Inferno, seen here -

that I have no trouble with rolling over the thumb hole.

This ball has the CG kicked out towards 5 O'clock and required no X-hole due to only 2.1 ounces of top weight.

On the following ball, which only had a little over an ounce of TW http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr/wMTAwNTYwMjZzNDEzZGZkMzF5NTQx.jpg

the MB ends up being about 1.5" left of my thumb from the centerline.  When I first got the ball I did roll over the thumb, but that has changed and I'm not sure what I've done to prevent it.

I do roll over my thumb with most plastic spare balls, but with the shorter span on my new urethane spare ball I don't notice it any longer.
