Drilling help
« on: December 27, 2011, 10:59:15 PM »
Axis tilt-10*

Axis rotation-45-60*

Speed-17mph.Speed checked thru heads

Pap-5 7/8 up 7/8

Synthetic lanes-Medium heavy oil

I hope i have given enough info for you to help me.I have aWicked Siege i want to get drilled.

I have been using nothing but syn.core balls, which are drilled 4x4.These are great but with later carry down they don't have the good transition i want.

I was thinking i could drill the Wicked 55 x4.5 x40 but am not sure if 55 is enough to clear the front part of the lanes.

All help is appriciated.

You've given plenty of info, and with a little more info we can give some pretty precise advice.  Tell us a little more about the condition you're bowling on, and what your other balls do or don't do on that.  The Wicked is a great piece to get through the fronts, but if you have carrydown it may struggle a bit.

also what is your rev rate. What I have found works best for carry down are balls drilled with pins farther from PAP and a weight hole placed down the VAL. This helps the ball be cleaner through the heads and respond smoother through the mids and make a strong continous move in the back part of the lane. Weight holes tend to work better on carry down or after transition.

My rev rate is 275-325.That is close as i can get.The lane conditions,41 ft. Ths shot Fresh.

The first game stays consistient, about the middle of the second the balls don't have the snap.they kind of mellow out, leaving weak tens.If i make a move right they charge hard to the pocket leaving 4pins or 4-9s.I need to move in to get past the track area but my confidence with these balls suffer,Anaconda,Python.

I was hoping a asym. ball would allow me to do better inside.I just don't know how the WS would work from this area.

Based on what you have given I think you are on the right track with the WS, I would look towards a smaller VAL angle (maybe like 40*).  Keeping the pin up will help it respond to what friction is down the lane, and then a larger second angle will keep it more continuous.

Another thought in the Brunswick family would be the Hellraiser.  From my experience that cover seems to handle a little downlane puddle a bit better than the WS.  Both balls are good though and should work for what you're looking for.  One thing to always remember is drilling is just a small piece of the puzzle, picking the right cover/core combo is 75%.  You're on the right track though going Asymm, just make sure you keep it continuous off of the friction so you don't start plackin' 10s.

Good luck!

You should post this over at bowlingchat.net and Mo Pinel can suggest a layout for your specs.

Based on the stats you have provided I would suggest no stronger than 4.5 on the pin. angles summing to 90-100 should be good assuming you match your rev rate and speed well. I've drilled a lot of Wicked Sieges since they came out. It's a great ball, I like mine a lot. I would suggest hand scuffing the polish a little. I found the box surface in most cases to produce a bit too much skid. The ball is clean through the front and makes a strong move on the back end. I feel the layout you suggested is pretty good. I agree with the person above who suggested a smaller first angle. Given what you are trying to accomplish and your rev rate you may prefer to get the core engaged earlier on the lane ... I would think something like 45 X 4.5 X 45 would be great.
