Thumb problem
« on: July 17, 2009, 11:35:59 AM »
Hello.  I'm having a serious problem with my thumb.  After about 2 games, blood appears under my left thumb nail and blood collects under the skin right below my thumb nail.  It feels like the skin is about to separate from the nail and it's very painful.  So painful, I have to quit bowling and wait for it to heal which usually takes about a week.  I like a real tight thumb hole which is ovaled and have reverse pitches.  I've been bowling with and ovaled thumb and reverse pitch for years.  I was hoping a ball driller might give me some advice as to what is wrong.  I've included a few pictures of my thumbs for comparison.  The thumb in question is the one on the right in the photos.  Thanks.

Are you pushing your thumbnail against the back of the hole? That's what it looks like. I know many advocate this with the thumb but the fact is a good fitting thumb still must make light pressure with the pad area of the thumb.

Thanks for the answers guys.  From the link, I see my problem clearly.  I've got all three causes for blood under the thumb nail and under the skin where the nail meets the skin.

Causes:

Reverse Pitch - I don't have a gauge, but it's at least 3/8 reverse.
Span Too Long
Hole Too Big

Since the thumb hole is too big, I've added lots of tape (8 pieces +) which I'm sure has increased my span.  I'll try moving it to the back of the thumb hole instead of the front.

JohnP, thanks for the link.

imo when using tape infront of the thumb it is best to not go over 4 peices (the type like elec. tape) or 1 peice of the vise grip tape. the later is the stuff i use now and only req. 1 peice and i last for quite a wile (unless you death grip the ball). any othe tape needed should be use in the back side or use the cloth tape for the thumb itself.
