Drilling layouts for very slow speed
« on: October 06, 2018, 05:56:58 PM »
I turned 72 this year and it seems like my ball speed has really been suffering, I never had great ball speed usually 12.5 mph but here recently I have noticed that the speed has gotten down in the 10's . I read an article in Bowling This Month some time ago and there was an article on this very subject which the writer said with age comes slower ball speed and he said basically it is a fact of life and that even dropping down to lower weight would not really help that much. My question to those who drill balls is, is there certain layouts that are designed for slower ball speeds if so could you suggest some. Thanks it advance appreciate any help. I usually have a good first game but as soon as they break down some then I move left but seem to continually go high

I usually like to go with a weaker ball with a short pin to pap. For example, depending on what you're starting with, I'd probably put you in a Boost Solid or After Dark Solid with a 2 inch pin to pap. The 2 inch pin is going to stabilize the ball motion, the cover will give you the friction off of the spot. Adjust surface as needed.

The only issue I have had as a senior with slower 13 mph ball speed at back end is that 2" short pin balls definitely don't carry as well lots of weak 10's with my rev dominant stats.  Ball choices like an After Dark makes sense.  I would look at Rhino and Hustles also which if you use 14's are the lowest Rg light oil balls you can find 14 lb. 2.53.....the rest of the lighter balls are all high Rg 2.56 and above.

Possibly a stronger ball with a 2" pin might make sense from a carry stand point that is if it's not too strong to use on the OP's lane condition with his stats.

Thanks for the input on solutions to my problem, I decided to try the 2 inch pin to pap and see how that works as I don't believe I have ever had a 2 inch layout before. I did order the After Dark which will be my first 900 Global ball as well so it will be 2 first for me, thanks again and have a great day.

Hope you do well with the After Dark Carl!  I feel your pain as a slower ball speed 69 year old vintage bowler.  :)

Carl,

I think you're going to love the After Dark. Please remember that surface management is key with shorter pin to pap layouts, so tweak the cover until you get what you're looking for.

I really do love this after dark ball as well as the 2 inch pin, I had a 70x2x50 layout on the ball and this is just what the doctor ordered. This ball is not a weak ball by any stretch but it does not over react when it hits the dry and it still works on broken down patterns. First 900 Global ball and first 2 inch pin and I am sold on both. Special thanks to impending doom.

Carl,

I'm so glad you like it, sir! Congratulations on your first 900 Global. We're very happy to have you.

If you want something down the road that is still on the low end but you need it to pop downlane, consider a Boost pearl with a long pin to pap. 5 to 5.5. It will give you a different look going through the pins than the short pin ADS.

This is where USBC screws up. I tend to do longer pin to PAP for slower ball speeds and a P1 Hole hoping to delay the flare for as long as possible and adjust the surface as needed with Step 3, Finesse-It, or Extender Polish then Factory Finish. That hole helps in extreme cases. It'll just soon have to be that without the hole or longer pin and bigger VAL angle.

I might get beat up with this but my opinion is that you might want to try an asymmetrical with very large angle sums. Both drilling and VAL angles being high. Pin location appropriate for your intent. Closer to 4 inches if trying to cover boards or over 5 if trying to get forward roll. Unfortunately there aren't a lot of asymmetrical balls with higher RG and weaker covers which will help too.

If you must stick to symetrical balls go weaker cores and covers while having long PAP to pin distances which will reduce flare.

I see where everyone is going, but the surface being key in getting it down the lane, and laying that big round core down is going to allow him to keep it in front of him. 2 inch pins aren't for opening up the lane. Hence the Boost with a longer pin recommendation.

I don't have a problem with your recommendation  of a Boost with a long pin and polished. I think that is good. I however am not a staffer of any company and feel that there are other options with multiple companies.

Well, of course there is. I just like my options the most.

First I'm older than you by several years and I also have a problem with slower speed.  After having to lay off a year for health reasons, I found that my speed has dropped to between 10.5 and 11.  Dry lanes have been giving me a hard time.  I dropped to 14 lbs. a few years ago and don't want to go lighter than that if possible.  So, I recently went to some weaker balls.  For example, I picked up an Ebonite Turbo/R.  This ball really surprised me as to how much it will hook.  I also got a Hammer Willow Spare and drilled it strong because it's plastic.  Now when I run into dry lanes I have something that will work without having to move way left out of my comfort zone.  I still have some stronger balls that I use if I run into oil, which is not too often.  In my opinion, rather than worry  too much about layouts, I think it might be better to consider weaker balls with polished or pearl cover stocks.  If you want a solid you might look at the Ebonite Destiny Solid or something similar.  That's just my $.02.

Good luck.

My dad is like 12 mph, and he has liked the pearl cell line balls with a far pin to pap. Seems to get down the lane well....but he doesn't wheel it though.
