Pin placements
« on: April 10, 2006, 11:05:56 AM »
At the TOC I noticed Chris Barnes throwing a ball with the pin 1-2" above the bridge and the CG only 1" below the fingers, the ball that Patrick Allen used on several shows also had the pin well above the fingers. What is the purpose of this type of layout.
I ask because recently my ball driller watched me bowl during league and his suggestion was get a couple of long pin balls and put the pin 2-3" above my fingers and try to keep the CG above my midplane in order to store energy longer and still have a crisp backend reaction.

I think your driller answered the question for you.
Basically, it's to provide length (retain energy) and it increases the "crispness" of the reaction (makes the transition more suddenly).
Theoretically it reduces flare and allows a later hook than the same ball with a lower pin position. (ALWAYS relative to the same ball thrown by the the same bowler on the same oil pattern)
