finger grip shims
« on: November 27, 2009, 02:48:46 PM »
I saw a video by innovative, where he said not to glue the top of the grips so that you can put a shim there to tighten the grip if you need to. I was wondering if anyone else has ever heard this and tried it,I was also wanting to know what you would use as the shim. The video is on the innovative site under installing finger grips.

Vise Grip has 1/2 sizes and work great if you're between full size. Just my $.02, Bruce

I STRONGLY RE recommend the Milosports shims ... they are 1/64" thick and EASILY inserted and removed. I found that a drop of super glue GEL at 3, 6, and 9 o''clock with your inserts works best ... that leave the top (12 o''clock) to insert these shims. I have even used two side by side in one hole before with no problem.

OK. I'll bite. Just ordered a few sets. They're cheap enough. The cut-up business cards gets trying after a while and they wear out.

My father and I have been doing exactly this for years.  My fingers swell and shrink quite easily, so this is really the only way for me to combat this.

Has worked well for both of us, so I don't see where it wouldn't work for you.  Give it a try, if you like it great, if you don't, oh well.

Can also use straws...works well and they are available at every center. I carry a little pair of scissors and just cut the straws, flatten and insert at 12 o'clock.

As uwecbowler stated, you can use regular drinking straws. I drill all the my finger holes with a 1" bit about 3/4" deep and then drill to the required 1 3/4" with a 31/32" bit. I glue the front of the insert and just a small bit on each side, leaving the back open.  This gives me a little play for when my fingers expand/contract. If they seem a little big, I just cut a piece of straw about 3/4" long and put it between the insert and the ball. Works great, costs nothing and won't affect your feel.

Before I went with vacu grips, I just used the backing of bowlers tape or whatever brand you used. Works great and is always on hand.

I use cut up business cards for shims. I have a small box of them in the bag and a pair of tweezers for taking them out.
