I realize this may sound like a strange question, but what is the exact effect of using finger inserts that are too large? There must be a reason for the various sizes rather than just using a generic insert. Is the main reason comfort or does it aid in the grip? Please note that I am not asking about type of grip... oval vs power oval versus smooth vs nubs... nothing like that. Those are all definable answers. I am only talking about the size of the grip. As long as your finger fits in the grip, why do we (or do we) care whether there is extra room or not?

Sorry it's a question that's beneath your obviously superior intelligence, but yes, I'm serious. There's a big difference between the relatively small delta in finger sizes and shoes. The logic doesn't follow. We call that a non sequitur, brother (look it up).

That is a strange question. The answer, for me, is both comfort and aid in grip (these are one in the same for me). I have some older balls with the grips worn a bit (too large) and they feel quite odd vs fresh grips. They're still able to be used, simply not as comfortable.

Comfort and aid in grip. More, to me, the former rather than the latter.

Holes that are too large force you to grip or squeeze the ball to hold onto it. This squeezing the ball causes the muscles to tighten from the hand up through the arm and shoulder.
This affects your ability to have a relaxed swing and release etc.

Thanks GT, that's basically what I'm thinking as well. Funny thing is this... After all the work I've done to get spans where I want them, for the last 3 weeks it's all gone away, and badly. Odd thing is, I accidentally ordered grips that were too large and started using them 3 weeks ago also since I didn't anticipate a difference. It's only 1/32 off in size from my norm. The most basic rule in troubleshooting is to always return to the last change, so I'm starting the hunt with grips, although I suspect, as Steven has mentioned in another post, I probably still don't have the span right. It was all great until I switched grips though... I admit it is odd.

Another thing to note is using grips that are too big can shorten your span, Do to the thinner wall thickness of the insert. (Assuming the driller remembered to take the wall thickness into account for the cut to cut measurement when he mapped the span out on the ball originally.)

If your grips are only a size too big, you can wrap them with thread sealant tape. All it takes is one wrap around, then glue them in. That'll snug'em up a little and not waste your inventory. But, make sure you don't wrap too high on the inserts or the tape may sneak up above the insert hole a little. This is of you do not use Vacu grips. If you use Vacu, just take the paper that your thumb tape comes on, cut it in half and then fold once. Place this on the nail side of the insert and it will snug them up a pinch.

Some people jam their fingers into the grips and like a tight fit. Some prefer a looser fit. I used to use a pretty tight fit, but my fingers would get worn and get callouses. I recently went to looser grips and just changed my finger pitches so I could hold on better.
