Title: flaring on the edge...
Post by: xrayjay on March 02, 2016, 03:34:57 PM
I noticed the thumb holes on these balls are getting clipped, my spare ball and my low flare balls. My pap has changed that's for sure cause even the track is getting closer to the fingers by half an inch.

It's been a while now, about 4 to 5 years since I had my grip checked. During that time I've taken a year off and my body has changed in size. Likewise, so has my game somewhat.

Does my grip need to be reevaluated?

I bowled on a medium-heavy volume condition last night and my solid medium ball was flaring over the thumb. Should I be concerned?

Wait for the experts, like Justrico or JohnP or BrunsNick, but I suspect your release is to close to that of a full roller. I wonder if it isn't a case of not getting the thumb out quick enough. I'm not sure though.

I don't track there, but my spare ball tracks a good 1"to 1.5" closer to my thumb compared to all my other balls. Doesn't really help you but it might be the case more so for your spare and low flare balls

The change in location of the track doesn't necessarily mean that your PAP has changed, more likely that your axis tilt has changed.  Put a piece of white tape on the PAP location you've been using and see if it indicates a change ( be sure to get someone else to watch it off your hand to get an accurate indication).  --

Your spans most likely haven't changed, the size of your fingers may have.  What's changed in your game, speed, revs, hand position, etc.?  --

Does my grip need to be reevaluated?  --  Absolutely, everyone should have their grip checked every couple of years.  --

It sounds like you were staying behind the ball more, decreasing your axis tilt.  If so, a hand position change should get you off the thumb hole.  --  JohnP

I've always been a semi-roller. When I returned after over a decade away from the game, my axis was 4 3/4 @ 15/16 up. Then over the last decade my axis had slowly increased. My current axis is 5 1/8 @ 1/2 up. Tilt was in the 10* range, but decreased. Rotation is around 45 - 55*

I'll be checking my axis next weekend or two when I have time to go to the shop.

There's not a lot of difference between those two PAP locations.  If you use a piece of 1" square white tape both will show a dot on release if either one is correct.  --  JohnP

Could depend on your layouts, let us know what the axis is now, it may have changed again causing that layout to be weaker than you thought.

The original track is irrelevant of the layout/pin to pap unless an excessive amount of loft is involved and James you do not do that
Due to your swing plane, I can see it getting on the outside thus feeding the ball into the lane right to left instead of left to right...which incurs a thumb down release bringing the track up and as charlest remark closer to a full roller
Since I haven't worked with you in years this would be my assessment of knowing your tendencies but I would not blame the layout

And it's not flare that's on the edge it's the track...flare is what occurs after the initial contact occurs...
