I was thinking about drilling a ball like this. Does anyone know the advantages, or disadvantages of this. I was thinking about getting 2 used balls, trying one in ring finger, and one in middle finger. any feed back would be helpful.

Nothing fancy... I guess you get an unspectacular ball recation out of it, since it falls between the 2 "standard" positions above (more length) and below (early roll) positions. Depending on your PAP, you should get medium flare and hook potential from the ball - more with the pin in the ring finger position. Should do well on medium oil, while the pin in middle finger position is rather good for lighter condition. MB/CG position will also determine how sharp the ball breaks.

If the layout you want puts the pin within about 1/2" of a hole there's a good chance of cracking from the hole to the pin (most warranties say 1"). Putting the pin completely within the hole keeps the layout roughly what you desired while eliminating this chance of cracking. You should never drill out part of the pin unless you don't care if the rest of the pin breaks out. -- JohnP

Distance from PAP is what matters.....as long as you drill the whole pin out (as JohnP stated) you will be fine....

I agree with Jabroni, JohnP and srlunatic.
I've done it on several balls, because I wanted that approximate pin distance, PLUS I wanted more length than putting the pin under the ring finger but not as much as putting the pin completely over the ring finger. And you know what, it worked just fine: got a good ball reaction.

I have the Big One (slightly polished) drilled with the pin in ring finger and MB at about 30 degrees. Ball goes pretty long and breaks smoothly into pocket on medium to medium-oily conditions. Extreme conditions and it'll either burnout or skid, but for most conditions works just fine.

Distance from your PAP helps determine how the ball will roll. But, distance alone won't be the deciding factor. Whether or not the pin is up or down will give the ball more or less length.

Therefore, if the pin is 4 inches from your PAP, but is next to the ring finger, the ball will go longer and hook more on the backend than a ball 4" from your PAP, but next to your thumb, which will roll earlier and smoother on the backend. =:^D

Since when do you agree with him?

It is NOT as important as pin distance; can't be. It does have a secondary importance, though, with respect to length and, thus, roll.

Pin distance is MUCH MORE important than that. It determines amount of potential flare and thus amount of potential hook PLUS amount of potential length.

I have a Super Charge drilled with the pin in the ring finger. Shot sanctioned 300/804 with it. I've used this drilling in a few other balls with good results. Based on my pap it's about a 4 1/2" drilling.

It matters to high-trackers! The safe area for pins for bowlers with high tracks is above the fingers. Otherwise, they may clip some holes.
