Title: Grips vs. No Grips
Post by: Stormkid84 on December 02, 2008, 12:43:47 AM
I have always used grips and was thinking about experimenting with no grips.  What advantages or disadvantages are there?

Me: "These lanes are tight. I have 2 boards!"
My buddy with front 8: "Me too!"
Me: "Yeah, but yours both have arrows on them, and an arrow in between!"

When i did that it wrecked my finger, plus I felt like I lost some revs which probably makes sense.

I feel bad for the bowler's defenceless equipement when the bowler is not bowling up to par. . . .don't you?

it helps for some not to grip the ball as much during the release, my friend just switched from grips to nothing and has 2 299s a 300 and 846

ok I just recently have dne the same thing.. I've heard most people lose revs on the ball when you do it or you van get bad caluses.. neither has happened to me.. I was going through so many sets of grips it just didn't seem to economical to not even try without them.. I think if your fitted correctly and if you like the feel it will be ok...

To each their own. I myself found that I over hit the ball with inserts like there was no penalty for turning it too hard. I like the feel of the ball, never have to worry about changing anything when the wear out. Took some time getting use to, but for me I just like the clean feel of no inserts.

Thanks for the quick responce.  I drill all my equipment myself, and unfoutunaltly I only have a measuring ball to go off.  I know I don't want to go cut to cut with my balls with inserts.  So i would go from the edge of the insert, correct?

Buying used balls screws things up....I would love to try the switch from grips to no grips, but it is convienient, just popping out the sellers inserts and sticking my size in, when buying something used.....Joe

I have not used grips in years, and i am more than happy with the switch.  I still rev the ball as much if not more than i used to and i definetly get out of the ball alot cleaner.

I made the change a few years ago. No regrets at all. Always had problems with inserts swelling, shrinking in different temperatures. So I changed to no grips but with a good amount of bevel. Get out of the ball much cleaner with no loss of revs at all. I would definitely recommend it and play with the amount of bevel to get the perfect feel.

I guess it's all about getting used to it. I have a few balls with no inserts.
You do come out cleaner, but the amount of revs, definitely goes down. I also have to be more precise when I change to a different release.

Occasionally, I have gotten moisture or oil on my fingertips and not realized it until I go to a different release, and then the ball comes off my hand in a totally unexpected mannner. As I said, I have to be a bit more precise, and pay strict attention to where I place my ballhand at all times, when using no grips.

I am actually one of the few that went back and forth and back to inserts again.

I went to no inserts and liked it for a while, but over time i felt i was loosing it and not able to hit it at the bottom and had no feel.

Then went back to inserts and found i over hit everything and got used to it. Then about 18 months later went back to inserts. for about two years i went without and this summer i lost weight and all my fingers didnt fit anymore so i was loosing it again. Went to inserts and have been for the last three months. Found my reactions are stronger again and my carry has slightly improved. I own a proshop so i change inserts usually about every 30 games.

I personally prefer inserts. i definitly overuse my inserts(I am currently in the couple hundreds on my gravity shift and havent noticed a difference even though I turn the ball pretty good and really hit it.

Just a quick question:   Should the none grip holes fit pretty tight/snug to the finger, or should they be kinda big? Thanks

I switched a while back for a couple reasons.

First, in the summer, the grips would get even softer and in longer tournaments/practice, I would tear the pad on my middle finger.  REgardless of what type of grip, and it never happened except for summertime.

Next, maintenance.  May not seem like much, but you do have to replace your grips a couple times a year.

Finally, it just feels cleaner and smoother to me.  I didn't notice any loss in revs and it made my release better since I hung in the ball less.

I say switch a ball or two and see how you like it.

No grips will give you a cleaner, earlier release and therefore more "roll" on the ball. However without grips you will also lose a couple revs. I tried no grips a couple years ago to experiment and no question my release was smoother, but I'm a power player and quickly discovered I lost my advantage. Shots I missed a couple boards right of target that used to get back for light mixer/blowout strikes, now resulted in light 2/2-8 leaves.

However my good friend tried the same thing this year and is never going back to grips again. His ball roll is better, his average is 8 pins higher, & he tossed his first ever 300 game. Just comes down to individual preference.

I suggest picking-up a good quality used ball or a mid-priced new piece to try before spending the real cash on something top end. It's not going to take you more than 6-7 games to have your mind made up either way.

I find blood under the skin on my ring finger when I bowl 4 or more games without grips. It gets really sore and UGLY when I bowl 10 game sweepers.
Grips help ME bowl more often and longer. I KNOW I'M A FREAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love the feel since switching to no inserts. I have my fingers ovaled and fit well and have no issues. And in a very rare case I can always add a little tape to the fingers as well.

I know the first time I did it was to save a few bucks on future equipment, now I realize that I like the feel better and am very glad I made the change.
