Title: How to remove a stuck switch grip insert?

I was given a ball with the switch grip already installed today and when I went to put my insert in it got stuck about half way down and now I can't get it out.  I tried pulling and turning it with a pair of pliers and succeeded only in damaging the plastic with the teeth of the pliers.

Please help me out!
