Title: Hybrid Upgrade for RICO layout
Post by: earlyrolling on June 21, 2016, 01:13:32 PM
I currently have a RICO HyRoad but these days the HyRoad on today's oils does not have as much back end motion as I'd like.  Yes I know RICO layout is smooth but looking for a stronger hybrid still to put the layout on.  I was thinking of going with the Motiv Primal Rage Remix since it has a higher RG (like the HyRoad) and a stronger Diff.  Any thoughts?

Sorry, I can't resist:

You want a hybrid that's flippier than a Hy-Road, yet you're still going to put a Rico drill on it to smooth it out????

Why not just buy a ball that has the reaction you want, designed into it, and put a normal/average drilling on it??

I'm siding with Charlest on this. Also, how fresh is your Hy-Road? If you've had it for a while and it used to do the job for you, why not buy a new one? All the newer ones I've seen including my own turn the corner on modern oil with ease.

It's not the ball, it's the drilling, but a ball can need an oil extraction and a freshening of the surface to restore its performance.

I agree with Charlest here.  I would also say if you were to do this layout on a stronger covered ball, I think it would end up slowing down earlier and laying off more than the ball you're using now.

Stronger backend reaction will depend on the lane conditions along with the bowling ball and the bowler.

I have had several different bowling balls on the Rico layout that have had plenty of backend reaction. Originally the pin to pap for me was 5.5" now it is at a 5" pin to pap.

Depending on the number of games on your ball, and how well it has been maintained or recently cleaned can be a huge factor. If not cleaned/deoiled/surface adjusted there is a really good chance any newer ball including another Hyroad will hook more on the backend for you then your current ball no matter if it is a hybrid, solid, or pearlized cover

Refreshing the surface and re-polishing did the trick!  Thank you all!
