Issue with PAP.
« on: September 02, 2016, 10:04:15 AM »
I fully realize what I am about to suggest may sound silly, but wondering if it may actually be viable. Please don't laugh...

PAP is an easy thing to find in theory. There are multiple options. In various scenarios I use the oil ring philosophy, the tape philosophy, I've had other people check and tell me what they believe, etc.
So far, while taking a lesson, I was told it is 5 x 1-1/2 up on video. I measure it to be 4.75 x 3/4 up by watching tape manually. Pro shop #1 says 5-1/8 x 1-1/8 up, and pro shop #2 says 4 x 3/4 up according to the oil rings. Whatever it is, I've got it covered.... :)

I have downloaded slow-motion software, I have a tripod to hold my tablet, and am going to try measuring it again this weekend. Is it silly or not to put multiple pieces of tape in various locations and watch for the best actual effect using multiple pieces of tape at once? I assume that by placing tape in multiple positions, the video will tell me conclusively which one is closest to the real PAP, instead of measuring 5-6 times... Silly or not?

Here's one you may not have considered, your PAP changes from ball to ball regardless of who's measuring:

...so it does not surprise me that you've had it measured differently from source to source while, most likely, using different balls.

"Experts" are divided on how to handle this:

1. Measure PAP on a non-flaring/very-low flaring ball so as to eliminate core characteristics.

2. Measure PAP off of ball with similar specs that you intend to replace.  IE, replacing a Virtual Gravity Nano with an Alpha Crux should yield a fairly similar PAP.

I have heard the phrase, if its within the distance of the size of a quarter, the average bowler will not really feel a difference.  I'm not saying you may be one of those bowlers but what I'm trying to say is that maybe "ballpark" or "average" PAP may be good enough and that it might not be worth all the extra analysis considering all of the variables...

Try using a plastic ball or the lowest flaring ball and being sure to throw it in the middle of the lane or the heaviest area of oil.

If you get bored, using all the different paps listed, map it out on the ball for one layout say 50x5x50 and see how similar the results are visually on the ball.

I've heard the quarter rule also, and agree, but the deltas I'm hearing exceed the range I expected, although it is good to hear that it can change, as opposed to what I had thought. That does make it easier to understand, although harder to plan a layout.

Tape method on a spare ball will get you really close.
1/2 piece of thumb tape and keep moving it until it doesn't move around when you use your normal release.
Done this many times with no false info to my knowledge
