Drilling a Back up ball
« on: February 24, 2006, 05:31:22 AM »
Hello all,

I am considering drilling a ball to throw as a backup ball.  I bowl in a house where the left side of the house is considered fairly wide open, whereas the right side has OB.

I have drilled balls for myself and others, but have never drilled for a left handed bowler.  I would assume that I will want to just use a left handed drilling with my same grip size, but am not positive of that.  I am also not so sure what to do for PAP to Center of Grip measurement either.

Should I change the pitch or length of any of my fingers to try to give me a cleaner release.  As it is, I can perform this release with a fairly relaxed grip and armswign, but can't seem to get too much Angle of Rotation on the ball.

During warm up for league shot last night I threw three shots, just to check it out, and struck all 3 times.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Drew

My guess, but since you're using your right hand your spans should stay the same. Pitches I would probably do by feel.  Throw a full game backup, see what's rubbing and adjust pitches accordingly.

Just remember, unless you're extremely flexible, you can't come around the ball like you can with a regular delivery.

dr, I throw a backup occasionally when the shot warrants & the only problem I have encountered is a little more strain on my ring finger. As tjj said, you may have to experiment a bit with finger pitches for comfort. I track much higher with the reverse hook than with my normal right handed release. I would recommend a driller friendly layout for your first ball placing the pin above the bridge & the cg in your palm. Get used to the drilling, the reaction, & make any wanted adjustments on the next ball. Also drilling the ball neutral, you will be able to use it either way. Just a suggestion.
