What's everyone's thoughts on stretched spans. My span feels comfortable now, but my ball roll is more off the side and feels like I don't get downlane reaction I'd like. I've tried lengthening my span before and worked real well, for 4 weeks shot 3 700s and an 800 before pain in my arm was too much. Do you think that if I increase my pitches away more that if I go back to that stretched grip, everything would be good. My span now is 4 1/2 with 1/4 away on fingers. My stretched span was close to 4 11/16 with 3/8 away. Thoughts?

Bad idea. Once the honeymoon period wears off your scores will be back where they normally are and you will still have the pain in your arm.

There are many factors, flexibility of hand, fingers etc as to whether a person needs a longer, shorter or average span.
The general guildeline is that the more flexible the fingers and hand the lengthier the span can be in relation to traditional looking spans. The less flexible the shorter!
Also, if your ball roll is already ideal no reason to lengthen or shorten is needed!

I have actually just started experimenting, and I shortened my span just a hair, and it relieved all the finger soreness, but I still get the same roll as beore.

DMI,
For many like Bowlfreak shortening the span does end up giving one a more around the side of the ball roll.
I am one that suffers from this also. Many bowlers then use less lateral under when they go to a shorter span than they did before.

PS one of technical posters JustRico often says, get the span right first! or some variation thereof...

Also it seems like when I have a more relaxed grip, I do muscle it more than a grip that's stretched. I'm just trying to find a happy medium. If I go back to original span, roughly 4 3/4, just pitch fingers more I hope that solves my problem. Don't get me wrong that I'm bowling fine, just not to comfortable the way my ball is hitting, losing power cause of my roll.
