2nd opinion on grip
« on: June 22, 2012, 08:50:22 PM »
The person here say's his 13 year old nephew can't insert his thumb all the way into the thumb hole.

This photo as he puts it shows.
"photo is how far his thumb can get into hole, with fingers fully inserted into grip - in this one notice extreme negative angle, and his thumb can only reach 80% into the thumb hole. "

My thought here is the way the hand is positioned with the wrist bent back is pulling the thumb out of the hole not that the span is long.

here
"Photo of fingers over holes, shows just makes it past hole used to fit the grips in. His fingers not stretched, but absolutely not contracted. Normal, relaxed as should be. "

Here it's said that the span is too long because the first joint is at the edge of the hole.

He Feels the span is about 1/2" too long and should look like this  photo from ron cliftons site. and span check.

You can check your own span to see if it is in the “safe zone” by following these easy steps. (If you wear a wrist brace always make sure it is on when checking your span.)

1.      Locate the two creases at your finger joints and mark a line in the middle between the two as shown in photo.

2.      Set your ball on a table, fully insert your thumb and lay your fingers across the holes and stretch them pretty taught, then relax the hand.

3.      Once the hand is relaxed the line you drew between the two creases should fall within one eighth of an inch to the edge of each fingerhole.

Any thoughts?

I only see the one photo with the pencil marks on the fingers.  If there is supposed to be some photos before that one, I am not seeing them.

Yes there are three images in the post, they show here okay.  They load kind of slow though. I moved them to another host, maybe they'll load better from it. Heres the links just in case they dont show.

Well the point is moot now.

After going to 3-4 pro shops that told him the span was right. He found one that say's it's wrong and will shorten it.

Yes, I fully intend to demand that this ball be drilled 7/16 shorter.

I aleady emailed those pics to new pro-shop and found someone who is in total agreement that it's unusable

My comments on what people have said about the pics - and that he not holding the ball properly - that is 100% correct. He is absolutly not holding the ball correctly. But why are people balming him? It is phsyically impossible for him to hold that ball properly!!!!!!!!

The span is obviously too long judging from the picture. I would. Of say one half an inch. Does the proshop have an adjustable fitting ball?  While not required they are helpful.

Okay, today I can see all the photos and it does look like a long span.

Same thing happened to a teammate of mine years ago.  He had several balls drilled by different drillers and had his span rechecked by about five of them and they all came out about the same  - about an inch too long.  The new local driller saw him bowling and asked him why he was only putting his thumb in halfway and after checking his grip, he said his span was about an inch too long.  Plugged and redrilled his balls and now the bowler can get his thumb all the way into the ball and now knows what a correct grip should feel like.

He said he thought it was wrong but when five different drillers, most of them in Tucson and highly recommended by others, told him that his span was correct, he figured he had to learn how to throw the ball with his thumbtip.

kudos for finding a shop that can fit a hand for minimal grip pressure!  just because the first half a dozen guys agree, doesn't make the grip correct ;).
