Need help from the drill gurus
« on: February 11, 2005, 10:24:54 AM »
Trying to set up a ball for the Mrs.:
Wanting something for heavier oil, went with a particle ball and decided to set it up with the pin 2" from pap for early roll.  Had initially intended to place the cg near the mid-grip (2 x 5), so top weight was irrelevant (no balance hole would be necessary).  Now I'm second guessing myself and thinking maybe a 2 x 2, which would require a balance hole - a fairly large one as the ball has 3.2 ounces top weight.
My question: What different reaction would you expect in a ball set up 2 x 5 vs 2 x 2?
I have two concerns here:
1)I don't want a hook/set reaction, which I'm afraid I will end up with if I go 2 x 5.
2) Really don't want the large balance hole that would be required in a 2 x 2 drilling, with the high top weight (usually if I know I am going to leverage a ball I keep the top weight at or below 2 ounces).
Some stats to help you with your thoughts - she throws 13.5 - 14 mph (Qubica) with low revs and I guess I would say average axis tilt.  Good bowler - currently averaging 200 + in three leagues.
OK guys what do you think?

I picked up a Visionary Granite Gargoyle - the price was right so if it doesn't work out I'm not out a ton of cash.  As competitive as she is, if I can match a good drill on this ball for reaction but it is just not strong enough, she will probably go to a Lane 1 Carbide Bomb with a similar drill.

Ak - I would add best case scenario would be this ball work well and I won't have to spring for the Lane 1 price

The 2 X 2 drill will be more likely to have a hook set reaction than the 2 X 5.
Can you give some details about her and what she is currently using and the drill?

Storm Track - thanks for the reply.
First, I should say her pap is 5" over, 3/4 up
She currently has numerous balls I've set up:
Lane 1 Dirty bomb 4 x 3 with pin under ring - her best THS ball

X-Factor Reloaded 4 x 4 with pin next to ring - stronger ball for heavier roll
Ultimate Inferno 4 x 4 with pin under ring - this ball was a bust, was supposed to be for more backend, never got a good reaction, polished or scuffed

Lane 1 XXXL  5 x 3 - excellent dry lane ball - she's shot 700 with this ball on fried lane conditions

X-Factor 5 x 4 pin above the bridge, cg kicked out - was her "go to" ball for a long time - great reaction

What we are trying to accomplish is setting up something that will help her score on heavier lane conditions/carrydown.  Her biggest weakness in her game is she doesn't have a lot of hand - an excellent control player , but needs something that will create some area and, more importantly, hit on heavier oil.  Right now the strongest ball she has for oil is the Reloaded.

So, you think I should stay with the 2 x 5??

Thanks again for the help

One side note for Storm Track, - she decided she wasn't going to throw the X-Factor anymore, so I plugged the thumb and drilled it for my span.  The first night with it shot my first 800 - 243 - 279 - 279 = 801
Yeah, she was a little jealous : )

Going on what you have stated about her other balls and that she doesn't get very many revs on the ball I think that a 2 X 5 might burn of energy too fast.
I am thinking more along the lines of:
3 X 4 if she has 40° or less axis rotation
3 X 3 if 40-60°
3 X 2 if 60°+
All drilling pin on the line between PAP and ring.
These would set the core up early and then adjust the surface to match the condition.
My .02 worth.
Hope this helps

Storm Track - thanks for the reply.
I'll give it some thought and let you guys know what we decide and how it works out.
