What would theoretically happen if one were to measure, say, 7" right, left, up, or down from the pin, and THEN do the layout that far away? I've got a few blanks, may try it, but just throwing the idea out there.
Just started drilling, and wanna experiment. Have basic layouts down, but the way I was taught was to ignore the dual-angle stuff, and just measure. I'm gonna self-teach the angle stuff, been reading pinel's stuff.

You could end up with backwards flare, and/or excessive bottom and side weight - getting such a ball legal might be a challenge, and if it reacts well (or at all) is another doubtful issue.
A ball has a defined "top", due to its internal weight distribution (the pin), and from that the three major axis' are defined for measuring a ball's layout, the CG defining the right angles for the other two axis'. Everything is relative, sure, but ignoring the laws of physical science might have you end up with a useless, loping orb.

That's something I thought about, myself. My thinking is, if I can get ahold of core specs, then it's possible to create a layout on the "side" of the ball and make it do a whole new move. It will honestly be a waste of time/ball, but I think it's worth a try. Even if I plug and redrill one out of the closet.

Why would you choose to ignore the dual angle "stuff"?

He's been drilling a lot longer than it's been prominent, so he's of the mindset that it's "over-drilling," according to him. I understand the thought, that if a person is a machine and could repeat the shot the exact same way, it would really truly effect every shot the same way in the end, but humans are inconsistent.
I'm not ignoring it myself, I'm working with the way he's taught me so far, and I'm going to implement the dual-angle method slowly, working myself into it. I'm having enough of a time trying to get him to pick up an armadillo for PAP ease.

So, humans are inconsistant... so how much room does he allow himself to miss when laying out a ball?

I was under the impression you were going to drill a ball. Now you refer to "he"?

Dual angle is a great way to consistently layout a ball the same way every time if nothing else. Even if you don't understand the angles exactly you still have a general idea of what the ball does and you can consistently apply this to any ball you'd like, knowing you will have the pin exactly 4", 5",5.5" ect from your pap every time instead of approx or about as most people tend to do.
The complication comes from those who over think or over analyze what they are doing.
What new reaction are you hoping for?
