No-Thumb Layouts
« on: July 27, 2007, 06:40:16 AM »
I've recently attempted to learn a no thumb release.

I've noticed that on balls drilled pin over the fingers the ball will track right though the fingers and thumb, causing excessive thumping.  If I do it with a ball where the pin is to the right of the fingers, the ball will track just left of the fingers and thumb so there is no thumping.

Would anyone be able to explain why the track would be different on the different balls?  Based on just that information, would anyone be able to recommend drillings that would produce different results without thumping?  Am I by any chance full-rolling, and if so would those drillings be the way to go?

It sounds like you are experiencing an extreme up the back motion when you are throwing it using just your two fingers, have you tried also using two hands?

Try to throw the ball with more axis tilt (come around it more).

If this does work, what I have been drilling for my two finger bowlers on a THS, is pin out balls with a lot of surface.  What this seems to do for them is go very long but not have such an aggressive snap.  (Odyssey, Black Widow etc)

Hopefully this helps.

James,

I think you're right.  I think I am too much up the back.  Sometimes I'll think I hit it just right, it'll get to the breakpoint, and then watch it roll-out into the 3-6 much to my dissappointment.  Most of the time I have a hard time getting the ball to the breakpoint because it starts too soon.  Presently I've been trying to get through this with more speed.  I'll try to get around the ball more, which I've been afraid to do out of fear that it'll just hook more, which I don't really want.

I haven't tried two-handed.  It seems too different to my normal bowling, like starting all over.  Also seems like it'd be even harder to get any speed, right now I can actually get a decent backswing with the no thumb release.

As for the pin-out balls... where do you place the pin?  Most of what I've been trying have been shinier, weaker stuff.  Mostly a Shock&Awe, Jolt Pearl, SpitFire, XXXL, Action Attack.  Those have been giving me more than enough hook.  I haven't even tried anything dull.

Thanks

The surface will actually calm down the reaction on a THS.  It will allow the ball to actually not snap so much.
As far as "pin Out", try to get your hands on At least a 3 inch pin.  Place the Cg close to your ring finger in order to get a lot of finger weight (create more length) pin in a "stacked" position with the Cg.  What you should see is the ball go very long and give you an even reaction.  This reaction then becomes very controlled, making it much easier to score.
I also drill the fingers deep to help keep the ball legal, and keep the side weight down to about half an ounce, since you are creating so many more revolutions, you don't need any extra "help".
