Title: Pin beyond VAL?
Post by: johns811 on September 23, 2020, 08:31:01 AM
I'm curious as to what a ball would do if the pin was on the other side of the VAL.

I'm curious as to what a ball would do if the pin was on the other side of the VAL.

It is possible of reverse flaring.  It would be the same as a left hander (if you are right handed) putting the pin close to the VAL (10 degree angle layout).  So instead of the flare rings working away from your grip holes, it would flare towards them and possible rolling over the holes.

And if you're lucky enough so that it does not flare over your thumbhole, you would end up with a super smooth piece, that migrates very slowly!

This is the type of ball you'd use on burnt toast conditions when you're trying to control flare!

2 years ago I switch from bowling with thumb, to no-thumb. So for a few months my PAP was moving all over the place as I was learning how to bowl this way.

Anyway, had a Cyclone drilled based off of my PAP, which soon after was in a totally different place. The pin in on other side of VAL and the ball flairs backards, over the finger holes.

I do not notice any inconsistency from it hitting the finger holes (they are a little small, drilled for 7/8 sized grips instead of 31/32.

The ball it's exactly super smooth. It flair a few inches. Not too smooth or snappy. I think it does was Cylone was supposed to do. Not going to bother having it redone. It's more my main practice ball than for use during competition.

But based on reaction, nothing special were I would think to intentionally do this.
