Right handed guy throws a plastic ball at the 6-10 & states he either chops off the 6 or the 10 a lot. He has brought up the idea of trying to throw a back up ball at the spare.
Bowler has Fwd & right for his current thumb pitch.
My question is: should one change pitches when having a ball drilled to throw a back up ball? Having right may not be a problem, just wondering if the Fwd would be an issue for him? I personally would like to look at his plastic ball, but he is very set on trying the back up ball thing & brought in a tropical freeze to be plugged & re-drilled.

I will throw a back ball at some splits and when I do, I do it with my strike ball and the feel is fine. I don't think he would need to change pitches. I'm no coach or pro shop guy either. The pro shop guy that works in one of the centers I bowl in saw me throw a back up ball at a split and he told me I shouldn't do it because it throws off your shot/regular roll. He insisted that I go high side and hope to kick the pin over rather than throwing a back up ball. Made sense to me, but sometimes I find myself still doing it. In tournaments I won't.

To throw a back up ball the hand has to be either behind in line with the arm or on the inside closer to the body to allow the hand to rotate counter clockwise (for a right handed bowler)
If you place your hand and arm in this position, look where your thumb naturally goes...it should be pointing away from the body or left lateral

That is what I was thinking as well. I would prefer he just work on his plastic ball, but as stated before, he is set on trying this. Will give him a little left & also either 0 or a bit of reverse. Hopefully this won't hurt his arm swing since he will have this for the back up ball & Fwd & right for his regular ball. Thanks guys!

If a bowler delivers a bowling ball somewhat properly, where the hand is all that happens is rotation around the equator and a back up ball is actually easier

I hope so. Just don't want him to hurt himself or develop bad habits, but will see how it goes. Thanks JustRico

Releasing a bowling ball normally causes damages to many places on the body there is nothing natural abt releasing a bowling ball

I understand that, but this gentleman is in his 60's, which is the reason for the extra concern.
