PAP question...........
« on: December 31, 2007, 03:02:00 AM »
I remember reading in a recent posting that your PAP should be measured/found while using a plastic or low flare ball.
 1. Why??????
 2. If you do use such a ball, would the PAP not be different with a dynamic core due to the different rotation characteristic of that core vs. a low flare/pancake weight block and therefore give you a different reaction than you wanted when you get the ball drilled for a certain reaction??????
Thanks in advance for all replies............

I think it just takes out the flare rings that a high performace ball gives and the plasitc is a solid line. Not sure really though just the only reason I could think of. lol

I don't think it matters.  I found mine with an Arsenal Artillery (that ain't low flare).  Just use the line closest to your thumb; that's the first roll the ball made on the lane.

I throw my spare ball differently than my strike ball.  Even if I try, I can't make it look the same.

The usual ways to determine your PAP involves looking at the first oil rings on the ball.  If you do not set the ball immediately down on the lane, if it rotating in the air at all, it can flare off the initial axis of rotation before it makes contact and the first oil ring is not centered around the initial axis of rotation.

On a lower-flaring ball, the axis of rotation will not change significantly while the ball is in the air (or on the lane, for that matter).  Spare balls tend to flare very, very little and so your PAP measurement will be extremely close to the true PAP.  With a high-flaring ball, the axis of rotation can migrate enough for the error in the PAP measurement to be significant.

The most accurate way is taking a plastic ball and taking the PAP off that.  You can always check yourself by putting a peice of tape on the pap and throw it down a lane to see if its right.
