Title: problem with 1 3/8 drill bit for IT system.
Post by: soonerdallas on January 26, 2010, 12:01:39 PM
my driller drilled out two thumb slugs and put the IT system in with no problem. then the next two the slug went in but wouldnt turn at all. so we plugged them and they worked so we thought the problem was because we were drilling into an existing thumb. but then we did a plugged ball today and had the same problem. any thoughts? cause any little bit helps. also there has been no problem with smaller drill bit

ive had this happen on mine a couple of times.  what i found (with me at least) was i need to sand the top sleeve a little more and it worked.  what i usually do now is install the IT test it with my slug, then install the top sleeve and it seems to work out fine.

we can get the top or bottowm of slug to fit in easily. and we have tried sanding it out more and it doesnt help at all

Might not be a problem with the drill bit. On the first 1 3/8 sleeves they were SLIGHTLY SMALLER than 1 3/8! Check out the vid from VISE INSERTS on different problems that have surfaced with the IT system.

We just got the system from vise two weeks ago. i figured they would have given us the newer model sleeves

Again, I'd watch the vid on troubleshooting IT. Viseinserts.com

we watched the vid and we did the test where u put the slug in the top sleeve upside down to see if it fits and it does. and it doesnt say anything else about it on the video besides that

One of the problems is that different color 1 3/8 thumb slugs have different OD's, thats why they came out with the larger sleeve. Not sure, but I think I may have been the one to call them up and alert them to the problem. The black ones always fit perfect, but the other colors are always tighter.  After you glue in the sleeve, use your bevel sander to make the sleeve larger and you will not have any problems.

All i use are black slugs. we have sanded a top slug for 30 seconds straight. do we need to do it even longer

drill might be traveling due to different densities? Are you sanding the sleeve or the insert? Should be sanding the sleeve.

How much do you file down the top of the hole before you insert the sleeve ?  What I have started to do, is to insert the sleeve onto the insert tool and see how tight the hole is before I glue it in.  IF I can keep the sleeve in place and move the insert tool up and down, then everything should be alright.  But I still would use the bevel sander to make it larger.

Also, you mentioned you are sanding the top of the slug, I hope you meant the top sleeve inside the ball.

Just a suggestion drill your hole, back out bit and vacuum and run the drill back into the hole again. You will be surprised the amount of material removed. Storm balls were very good at this especially the rad cores.

what type of drill or mill you got?

I encounter some when the machine shake too much and the pitch change due to the vibration.
When drilling plugged thumb holes make sure drill is sharp and drill it slow
keep checking for gage for movement.

you going to have to replug the hole and redo it.

and next time before and hammer the safty molloy and can put the top sleeve and the installer and turn it. If it stuck or kind of hard to turn then hole pitch move due to movement.

We just tried sanding out top sleeve and it cracked a little. should we drill out top sleeve and see if the slug will fit into ball without it and then put a new sleeve in. that way we know the problem is the sleeve

Use can try using a smaller bit as a pilot hole and follow up with the 1-3/8

How do u keep it from shaking if it does it half the time. and why not on the smaller drill bit does this occuR

I have found that some of the time the top sleeve will cock slightly when installing and cause the slug to bind. before i glue in the ball-it i use the installation tool for the ball-it as a guide to keep the sleeve from cocking

slow the machine down.

if the top and bottom of the holes are not square then you will have an issue with the thumb being very tight. drilling into different materials will cause this. Also trying to drill to fast and forcing the bit will cause the bit to "walk" a little.

Odds are the ball-IT is off center slightly. Like some have said, this causes the slug to push to one side of the hole.

Very interesting someone said the outside diameter of the colored slugs are different. I've been saying that since I got this kit when it first came out. I have gone exclusively to clear slugs for my customers. But even in some cases, two slugs of the same color can have different outside diameters. This can be a pain in the a** when drilling additional slugs for someone, so I just make sure to check that the slug goes in and out smoothly on their ball before putting a hole in it.

Otherwise, you end up reaming out the sleeves to fit one slug, and then the other slug ends up having wiggle room.

Got off subject a little there, but hey, GOOD LUCK! The IT really is an incredible system once you know how to avoid the common and not so common problems.

should we use standard plug or can you use the one hour plug? and we took out the top sleeve and can see a gap to one side. is it possible to buzz out that one side to make it fit?

also you said try using a pilot hole. what size drill bit and depth would you recommend.

yes we watched the trouble shooting video. and it only says something about drilling into a thumb hole. nothing else about it not fitting.

Any thoughts on the size and depth of the pilot hole?

I guess I'd go SLOW with a 1 3/8 to about 3 1/4 deep and then use the bit supplied with the kit.

Its not about how slow the bit feeds but the speed at which its spinning. The larger the bit the slower it should spin to work properly. If your machine is spinning at 400 rpm its bordering on too fast.

so we plugged and redid two that were messed up and did what you said. the first one came out perfect. the second came out super tight and wouldnt work. he used one hour plug instead of full plug. so should we try drilling out the slug and plug that is still in the hole and full plug it and try that. also i changed my pitches from 1/8 reverse to 1/16 forward and 3/16 right. so i have access slug in it along with the one hour plug. so should we try drilling all of it out?

alright so were drilling into the full plug tomorrow. any final thoughts so we can get this done right with no more problems?
