Drilling a One with cg on pin
« on: November 21, 2006, 04:41:29 AM »
Hello all, I have a Ebonite one bowling ball that came with the cg directly on top of the pin. The ball is 15lb 3oz and the top wieght is 3 1/4oz. I am a high track stroker. How can I drill this ball? I obviously can't do pin under very far because it clips the holes. Any suggestions appreciated. I want to get as much back end reaction as possible.

Thanks, cooksey

Thats a tough one.

If the Top Weight wasn't so high I would try and drill out the pin. with a bit just slightly larger that the pin and go relatively deep. Plug the hole and see wher the top weight was.

Since the Top weight is so high.

don't know if it will work but. Try drilling it with the Pin in the Middle Finger Drill and (if there is a Mass Bias Marking-Can't remember if the one has a MB or not) Put the Mass Bias in the strong position(depending on your PAP the strong position should be around 1.5-2.5 in from your thumb towards the axis midplane. If the ball doesn't come within limits drill the middle finger deeper. The side to side should be rather close. Your Finger Thumb will need fine tuning for sure.

Pin right under ring and mb about an inch right of thumb and you will be set, or pin next to ring and same mb placement will also work but probably will need a weight hole. Pin in balls work well for me i am a high track stroker also with higher speed, just do not use the layout on the label for me it was an over/under nightmare even with a pin out ball.

If it were me, I would simply refer to Ebonite's drill sheet to accomlish your desired reaction:

Good luck, and let me know if you have any questions.

For me mb strong on the ones series just poops out, i would recommend assymetric flip drilling because i know for a fact it works well. Just another thought tall core plus strong mb = loss of energy retention, i have owned 3 one's 2 big one's and 2 infinite one's so for me the assymetric flip is the king.

mass bias placement depends on the type of bowler your are.  The more rev dominant, the further away from the VAL you want to go.  (just don't get within 2" of your track because of clipping)  The more speed dominant you are the closer to the VAL you will need to go.  This is why the strong position works best for some, mb kicked out works best for others.
