Flare vs Energy Dissapation
« on: January 24, 2007, 04:31:49 AM »
Hi. Does anybody know if energy dissapation increases as the amount of flare increases? It would seem that the more the ball wobbles the more energy will be burned off. I haven't seen this talked about before so maybe it's a non issue. Just wondering that with my 15 mph speed and lower rev rate that maybe I should work towards compacting the flare but still keeping the oil rings seperate when I drill up a ball. BTW my PAP is 5 3/4 on midline.

When I get it right, the flare of a ball does not define how much energy is lost, but when. Any ball you play is released with a certain limited amount of energy. When the ball hits dry lanes, the friction between ball and lane surface will cause energy depletion. With a high flare potential drilling, the ball depletes energy quite early. If you encounter friction eraly, chances are high(er) that you lose too much power before the ball enters the pin, either simply rolling through or hitting like a wet donut. Surface prep of a ball will also have an influence.

Basically I'd say the more the ball flares thorugh the drilling, the more/longer oil you'd better have, and the more energy it depletes while moving on the lane. Might result in a wide hook, but this might not be effective concerning impact power. Complex thing.
