Example (5" X 5") layout
In the old terminology before Asymmetrical balls:
A 5" X 5" meant the (Pin to PAP distance) X (CG to PAP distance)

After the introduction of Asymmetrical balls:

For Asymmetrical balls a 5"X 5" meant the (Pin to PAP distance) X (MB to PAP distance)

For Symmetrical balls a 5" X 5" meant (Pin to PAP distance) X (virtual MB to PAP distance)

Since Symmetrical ball don't have a marked Mass Bias. The virtual MB is a spot measured 6 3/4" from the Pin along a reference line drawn from the Pin through the CG.

Note:
The old terminology is still used by some, so be sure to check just which is being used.

Storm then added in the Pin buffer (which sets the VAL angle)

Example (4" X 4" X 2") layout
This usually refers to the Pin Buffer System:
Which is (Pin to PAP distance) X (MB to PAP distance) X (Pin to VAL distance)

Note:
When using the MB in these systems, the first two measurements must total at least 6 3/4", which is the distance from the Pin to the MB or else some combinations of measurements using this system are impossible. Example a 3"x3" Layout.

On a 5 X 5 layout

For a symmetrical cored ball the second number would be the PAP to the Virtual PSA/MB.

Which is found by drawing a line from the Pin through the CG and marking a point 6-3/4" from the pin.

I should have said the second number would be the cg to PAP distance.  When using this system for layouts pin to PAP and cg to PAP are the two distances used.  Your statement about the MB location after drilling is correct, but that location is not used when laying the ball out in this system.  --  JohnP
