Need a little help from you drilling/layout wizards...
« on: April 21, 2006, 05:43:43 AM »
Could you guys (and gals?) "guess-timate" the layout measurements (Pin X CG/RAD to PAP) for the five Storm balls I have listed (linked to pictures) in my profile...my PAP measurement is also in my profile (5.25 X .5^).  I have also "guess-timated" them as well but I just want to compare my numbers to the numbers "guess-timated" by someone who knows what they are doing.  TIA!!!

VT,with yopur pap being so close to mine this might be easier for me to guess timate.
Trifecta 5" pin to pap, 5-1/4 rad to pap
Vertigo looks to be a 3-3/3 stacked, with rad being 5-1/4 - 5-1/2 to pap
Diablo 3-3/4 to pap, mb 5" to pap
Fired Up 4-1/2 to pap, mb 5-1/4 - 5" to pap
Banchee 4 x 4 stacked mb to pap 4-3/4

I plugged some numbers into my layout software to get what looked like the layouts you have and this is what I came up with. I used the theoretical MB on the balls that aren't marked so all measurements are Pin and MB.

Trifecta 5 x 6.5
Vertigo 3 3/8 x 6.5
Diablo 4 1/4 x 6
Fired Up 5 1/2 x 5 1/2
Banshee 5 1/4 x 5 3/4

Why guess?  Get a tape measure or flexible ruler.  Draw a line from the middle of your bridge to the middle of your thumbhole.  Measure your two spans, average them, and divide the average by two.  Measure the average from the edge of your thumb hole and mark it.  This is your grip center.  Draw a line perpendicular to the center line through the grip center.  To do this, you'll need a flexible straight edge so you can line its narrow edge up with the center line so the line will be perpendicular.  This line is your midline.  Measure over the horizontal PAP distance (5 1/4" in your case) and mark it on the line.  Draw another line perpendicular to the midline through the mark (use the previously described procedure).  This line is your VAL (vertical axis line).  Now measure the vertical PAP distance.  In your case this will be 1/2" down.  For the majority of bowlers that have positive vertical components, it would be that distance up.  You have just located your PAP.  Now it's simple to measure the distance from your PAP to the pin and to the cg or mb.  It takes a lot less time to do it than to describe how to do it.  --  JohnP

I could do that, but I'm lazy and several of those balls are in my locker at the bowling alley.  I was just wanting to "verify through guess-timation" that I had "calculated" the measurements correctly.

These are the measurements that I "guess-timated"...

Trifecta: 5 X 6.5
Vertigo:  4 X 6.5
Diablo:  4.5 X 4.5 (used CG, no marked MB)
Fired Up:  5.5 X 5 (used CG, no marked MB)
Banshee:  5.5 X 5 (used CG, no marked MB)

Looks my "guess-timations" were in the ball park.
