Custom Thumbs....what material do you use?
« on: April 25, 2006, 05:28:38 AM »
This is to anyone using Custom Thumb or Vise's system for thumb molds.
What material are you using to make the inserts...I am using Ultimates Wizard Quick Plug, it works very well as far as hardness but the all around feel can be a little tacky compared to conventional urethane slugs.  Just curious what you all are using and how you like it.

Thanks

We use the Wizard too, no problems always comes out smooth and easy to cut when we have to. I use the mold for myself and about 20 customers. I have even made Slugs from just wizard using the molding cylinder. The Slugs came out great. They were softer and using fine sandpaper they are really easy to make smooth.

VISE plug was crud for me, a little too soft. Sometimes, the mix didn't harden enough.

Dunno... I order direct thru VISE.

Maybe a bad batch, but I'm not paying 80 bucks for something iffy! Ultimate RULES!

Lucky Lefty....have you used wizard, in comparison of the two as to what you like the best about the Custom material?  It seems that most everyone prefers the wizard im already using but I wouldnt mind trying something diffrent.  Is it sold through distributors at all?

I read the instructions about the plugging that came with the custom thumb system and still didn't understand how the hell to measure it out right. it's a 1 to 1 mix but it doesn't come with a measuring cup or anything.

TheDude -- As long as it's a one to one mix, you can use any volume as long as you use the same volume of each component.  Go to WalMart and buy a set of metal measuring spoons for around $1.00.  Then use one tablespoon of each, or two tablespoons of each, or one 1/2 tablespoon of each, etc.  But be sure the correct mix is one volume to one volume.  If it's one pump stroke to one pump stroke, the two pumps may be set up to give different volumes, such as three to one for one pump stroke of each.  --  JohnP

I may be out of line here, never used this stuff, but on the lines of something to measure it with, again, I've never used it, but IF you have a nice Wal Mart Pharmacy, ask for child's measuring tube, it's 7 ml, has a scoop easy to read. I work there, I get those all the time for paints etc. I'm sure they'll give you a couple.

If I don't understand what you guys are doing, I'll shut up. But those are some great measuring devices, and they are FREE !!! Hard to beat , FREE !

We also use Ultimate Wizard most of the time. We also at one point had a plug that was made locally by someone that we know at the shop which had the most smooth feel ive ever seen for a thumb hole. Too bad it was over priced.
