What drill press to get.........Help.....

I am interested in getting a press. I heard you can buy the ball jig easily but what type of regular press do i need. Can i get any of those Craftman drill
press from Sears and put a ball jig on it? I don't want to invest in a $5k to $7K milling machine which my friend's pro shop uses. Let me know guys.

I don't think there's anything special about the press that makes it suitable for bowling.  Sufficient travel for the drill bits is about all you need to worry about.  The jig is what makes it special, and they're not cheap.

15-1292 was going for around $3300 last year.

That pro jig is $2k.

You can contact them and they'll send you a price list.

Don't forget the drill bits - they're not exactly cheap.

If you are asking so you can make a recommendation based on durability, I can understand. If you are asking so you can tell him it's not worth the investment, don't bother.

I got into drilling so I could experiment with different things and so I could take my time to get the fit "just right". I also did it for the "just for fun" factor. I'm glad I spent the money. I seriously enjoy the time I spend in my own little pro shop (just a room in my basement).

I've been drilling my own an a few friends stuff for 6yrs. now.I have a rigid press I got at Home Depot for 325$.I got a new jig an it all works great

Bowling drill presses especially table ones are a little different.

They usually have spindle travel(up and down) of about 5 or more inches.

This makes it easy to work on balls and change drill bits without taking the ball out.

ALSO they usually have throat sizes of 17 inches or more.  This figure 17 means one can put in an object with a radius of 8.5 inches or a diameter of 17 underneath the center of the drill bit.  This is great for bowling balls which have a diameter of about 9 inches giving one plenty of room to work around.

Most drill presses say at home depot with a 12 inch throat and a 2 3/4 spindle travel can be workable but are very cramped  to work with and also do not really have enough spindle travel(bits must be changed with ball out of press.  

As a result I purchased a drill press from Delta over the web titled a 17-365.
17 was the throat size and 4 7/8 spindle travel and it was delivered fairly cheaply.  Shipping is a big issue in shipping drill presses.  Charges of 400 or more by standard shipping companies is not unusual.  I also purchased a used jig right from this site for a reasonable price it is accurate and works great.

For me it has been a great unit.

Sturdy and easy to work with.  

I'm selling mine cheap but if I remember right you are on the west coast and shipping would be very prohibitive.

Here's a link to a Brunswick press now on e-bay.  It doesn't show up using a search for "drill", only "drilling", so I don't think many folks have found it.  It's located in Missouri.  --  JohnP
