Awsome flip advice
« on: December 02, 2008, 01:43:53 AM »
I just purchased an Awesome flip with a 4+ inch pin and roughly 3 oz of top weight. I am a no thumb bowler. Revs way dominant over speed. I need length with arc and a small amount of overall hook. My pap is roughly 5.75 over and .5 down. I have an inverted track. I clip the middle finger and am roughly an inch away from the thumb. I was thinking pin over ring with the mb either on the val or under the thumb. I have only drilled 1 high mb ball, a WMB. Great roll but too strong to use on local oil volumes. I need to tame backend. I actually want the mb to help kill the ball a bit. Thoughts?

No thumbers are a breed of their own.  You're going to have to find someone that is drilling for and/or working with one, I'm not.  I don't think ordinary layout theory applies to no thumbers.  Ordinary theory wuold say put the mb in the track to tone the back end down.  --  JohnP

I just got one of these as well. Just ask your driller what he thinks, he should be able to lay something out for you.

Ok. Drilled it with a high pin about 6 inches from pap and the MB just left of thumb which was about 6.5 inches from pap. The ball was very long. It stored a tremendous amount of energy. The problem was consistancy. The ball is very touchy with this drilling. Too much speed and it blows through the breakpoint. Too little speed and it's in the nose. The flare rings are about 1/8 of an inch apart. Not usable for an inconsistant hack like myself.
I'm redrilling with a 5.5 inch pin and a mb on the val. We'll hope for decent length with a hook stop. I'll update in a week or 2.

If you haven't already redrilled it you should try some different surface treatments first.  --  JohnP

I could knock the shine off and it would even out some, but it isn't even close with the first drill. One shot would hit the 3 pin in the face. The next shot would go high. Small release differences are being magnafied. Time for a do over.

Ball is redrilled with the pin next to ring and the mb on val. Very clean through the heads and mids with a late but predictable flip. Very useful ball with good control and carry. It likes dry down the lane. It tends to ping tens with carrydown. For comparison, it has slightly less overall hook than a jolt pearl with a similar pin position. They have similar length but the jolt starts up a tad earlier and flips harder. The AF goes a tad longer and a bit less sideways at the break. I can play a couple of boards more direct with the AF than the JP. This ball is a successfull step up from my liberator. More hook late, but not so much more that I can't control it.
