Surprising, presentage of balls that were illegal.

The national youth CTF championships have/are being held here in montreal. And i was asked to do the ball check/weight-in for the competitors. There was two scales there to ensure that if anyone contested the results of one scale a second scale and ball driller was on hand to verify the results.

Now out of 64 competitors with a maximum of 4 balls we weighted about 200 balls probably. I was using an Accu-check AMF scale and the second scale was a standard Kaufman scale. There was about a 1/16 difference between them.

We had a surprising 12 balls not pass. Most of them were for finger weight or side weight. Some were 3/8 to 1/2 over. But most had visual keys for the cg marking being above the center line.

One person had 3 balls not pass and for some odd reason they had just bowled at our national team trials the week before in vancouver where they did the same procedure. About 6 of the 12 balls did pass in vancouver but failed here.

So is a failure rate of about 6% good or bad?

I'm guessing that many people who never set foot into tournaments, or have their balls checked could possibly be illegal.  It's not the fault of the bowlers either.  I had a ball drilled..a Storm Vertigo..and it hooked like nothing I've ever seen before..and at the weirdest times.  I had it checked by another pro shop and it was so illegal it was ridiculous.  Wasn't my fault as I didn't know any better.

I figured something was up when I could bring it back from the half board after swinging it at any house, with the little bit of hand that I have.

From what I have seen at nationals 6% would be good.

I would bet 10+% of the balls at USBC/ABC nationals are rejected for weight issues.

TTT i would just like to hear other opinons on this. If a 6% failure rate is good or bad. If you have ever been at a tournament and one of your own balls failed or someone you know had stuff be thrown out for issues??

My first ABC Nationals tournament my ball was possibly just at or over 16# so they drilled the fingerholes deeper.  After that, I double-checked all balls to ensure that did not happen again.

Are you saying the ball will be illegal if the cg is above the midline? I have several balls with shorter pins and put the pin over fingers which put the cg right under ring finger. Most of those either have the fingers drilled deeper, or a weighthole.

I would say 5% to 10% of the balls weighed at the USBC national championship will have some legality problem.

It is amazing to me how few real "proshops" there are out there.

I can see 1/16 oz differences because of scales. And the quality of the people in the scale rooms can vary. But I've seen balls over 1 oz over.

It's more likely to have finger weight if the CG is above the midline and care hasn't been taken to get rid of it.  Low starting top weight may not require much, if any extra work.

We have a guy here with a Big One, pin is about 1:30-2:00 to the ring finger, with the CG at 4:30 to it.  Pin length is probably 1.5-2".  The CG is out of line to the right of the pin/MB.  I don't know who drilled it or what the starting top was (nor is this guy likely to know or care), but I don't see how it doesn't need a weight hole.  More than 2oz of starting top and it's probably illegal.

sonic1 -- Are you sure the problem was too much top weight?  The balls are made with usually no more than 4 1/2 oz of top weight,  If the ball is drilled with the top weight up, it's almost impossible to have over 3 oz of top weight unless you drill a large X-hole in the bottom half of the ball.  Now if you turn it over and drill it with the top weight in the bottom half of the ball, you could end up with high bottom weight, but I don't think any reputable driller would do that.  Most balls I drill end up with between 1/2 oz of top weight and 1/2 oz of botom weight.  --  JohnP
