Given no specific conditions, what would everyone's preference? A low grit cover (500 to 1000) with a higher (over the fingers) pin,.....or....

A lower pin with a higher grit(4000 or polished) surface??

No matter what the layout, I like moderately higher grit surfaces. Most of my equipment is sanded to 2000 and/or polished. For me, anything rougher than that rolls too early even on higher volumes of oil.

How can you ask that question on those terms Greg?
In my house I prefer pin over middle finger polished.
In a house across town I would probably start with pin under dull!

I'm just trying to get a cross section of opinions on which to base my next question. Lower pins will be earlier, as will the lower grit. Higher pins tend to be later as do higher grits. so was wondering which way most people go. Pin height or surface?

Since I know nothing about the lane conditions /coverstock / core shape, and I have to assume my style of play, I will choose a moderate grit (1500-2000) and a pin that gives me a moderate amount of roll vs. snap - maybe right of ring finger.

The more you know about your own game and style, the lane conditions you will experience, and the goal of the ball (spare ball vs. strike ball), the better you can hone in on what "the right ball layout and grit" would be for you for any particular situation.

Maybe I asked the question kinda funky. Lets try this. Given your current conditions, lets say you wanted the ball to move sooner. Disregarding the cost and hassle of plugging, would you choose a lower pin or a lower grit surface?

Now, if you wanted to go a longer, would you want a higher pin or a higher grit surface?

Drill every ball the same, either high or low pin and just use different surfaces. Thats what makes up a great deal of your ball reaction.

Always surface over pin placement for earlier/later reads distance wise.

I have 4 balls pin over bridge, varying coverstocks/cores/surfaces and see dramatically different reads from them all. I also have 4 balls pin under bridge and see the varying difference with different grits/polishes/covers as well.

Yea, I know. I'm saying thats the easiest way to do it, be yourself, myself or anyone, no one in paticular.
