Thumb Insert
« on: May 12, 2007, 07:46:48 AM »
Was looking for some comments on a molded thumb insert.  The one where they take a mold of your thumb and make an insert exactly like it.  For those who have one, Good or bad?

Thanks

They're perfect for me.  I use to take 2 weeks to get my bevel spots and drag points cleared out correctly.  With the molds thy are at about 95% perfect fr most people.

We use them at my shop and it saves so much time with some customers.  Each mold is less than 15 minutes and in those 15 minutes you can have the pilot hole drilled ready for the mold to be dropped in. Total time for ball 20-25 minutes including balancing and any adjustments. I can't imagine working out some people's thumbs 30 - 45 mins. every time we drill something up for them.

If you have a large oval or anything that takes a lot of workout I would invest in the molds. If you are a proshop I would also invest in the kit as it is a huge timesaver on those busy days and for those finicky customers out there.

There are a few drawbacks.  The molds feel slightly tackier than a urethane slug, and I stress slightly.  The slugs we can get REALLY smooth while the molds start out slightly tacky and smooth out with use and hardening time.

The molds can also vary due to amount of hardener or color added.  Only the pickiest of customers who have really sensitive thumb issues will notice but for the 85 - 90% majority the molds are fantastic.

We have customers in Alabama, Texas, Utah, and New York we mail balls to (I'm in California).  They call up and ask for a ball, we discuss the layout, pop a mold and mail it.  The system works.
