Thumb Issue, need advice
« on: March 09, 2008, 03:19:19 AM »
Hey guys, so I have been going through the same problem all this season and it needs to stop! I bowled a 6 game tourney yesturday and at the end coudn't even hold on to the ball. The problem is my thumb rubs like mad on the inner (index finger side) of the knuckle, and it gets blistered up bad, and fast. Currectly my pitches are 1/4 reverse and 1/8 left, they obviously need to be changed (thinking some forward pitch) and a good friend of mine also noted that I may want to see if I can get the thumb moved more offset to try and take pressure off that side of my thumb at release. This blistering has always haunted me but NEVER this bad and it needs to STOP before I go to state/pepsi/nationals. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks --

Open up your thumb hole? Use extra skin or talk on that side. Use thumb tape.

Azus, I currently use tape on my thumb, doesn't help at all, only delays the pain. My thumb holes are also pretty large as it is right now...

My span might be an problem, but this has always been an issue for me, just latly seems to be even worse.

I'm taking a ball into the proshop guy this week to see what we can do, I just hate the feel in the ball right now and the pain really needs to stop! Keep the tips coming though, best to have more ideas of what could be wrong...

A large hole promotes squeezing, but that should get you more on the back of the thumb.  Definitely have the span and pitches checked as Ric said.  Also, a little bevel work can make a big difference.  A few seconds of sanding in the right place will get you out quicker and without pain.

Wow! The span certainly doesn't look too long. If anything it looks a bit short. I would agree on removing the left pitch, & also with that short of a span, you shouldn't need 1/4 reverse unless your thumb is super stiff or some other problem. Have you been going to the same pro shop for a long time? I would get fit by someone else & compare suggested specs!

Post a picture of your thumb with the area in question marked somehow (Magic Marker?).  --  JohnP

if your thumb was in the ball when you took the pic, then your span is too short on the ball.have it checked.

WOW! You span looks short by quite a bit.
I would start by fixing that.
As for pitches...if it's still burning, pitch the hole towards the burn (rubbing on the left = move the pitch towards the left).

Thanks guys for the advice, I went in today and purchased a ebonite "clash" (had cool colors ) and had my span checked, it was indeed a bit short, and then we also took some of the reverse off of the thumb, to only 1/16 now (would love to try forward but one step at a time). Didn't get a chance to try it but I will on Friday, so we shall see if it works!

Well if you lengthened the span the reverse should probably be left in....there are tables for those things.

Also probably if this doesn't fix above(span lengthen)you need to take the left out!

Ok guys, update here. Got the "Clash" today, with longer span and such and threw it for 3 fast games. So far it feels much better! Not perfect by any means but I didn't have to use any tape on my thumb to protect it and it didn't blister up or start hurting. There was a little pain but thats to be expected as it is not healed yet from last week, and any pressure on it is soar.

As for the ball itself, I got it drilled with pin under bridge (closer to under middle) with cg in palm (even though it doesn't matter ). Ball was very snappy on the broken down shot, about 45 feet then just snapped and rolled, was a change of things from what I usually see and was kinda cool to watch .

Will update tommorow after 9 games of bowling (tournament).
