Dual angle without a Pro Sect
« on: December 11, 2010, 08:12:44 AM »
Ok, so I have a span gauge and can mark the lines, but a Pro Sect is fairly expensive for the minimal use it will get.

Please don't give me the obvious "have your pro shop do it". I've got 7-8 balls I'd like to check and would like to gain the knowledge to do it myself... Is there any other way to determine the angle easily? Is it possible just a simple protractor?

The only problem i see is you need something flexible to be able to contour to the curvature of the bowing ball....

I use a flexible tape measure and it actually works pretty good.

Ok, I'm missing something. I have a flexible tape measure, but how can that give me an angle in degrees?

Trace a straight line 6.75 inches from the point where the lines cross, like the pin for example. If you treat the pin like the north pole of the earth, then 6.75in in any direction will put you on the "equator" of the bowling ball. Then measure the distance apart of the 2 points on the "equator". Divide this measurement by 27in (the circumference of the ball) and multiply by 360 degrees, and will give you the angle. Pain in the butt in comparison to using a prosect but its doable.

Purchase a flexible protractor at a school supply store.  Like this one  http://schoolsuppliestoyou.com/helix-flexible-protractor-12101.html  That will give you the degrees and pin length up to 6"s or you can use a flexible tape measure for lengths.

Flexible protractor won't work. since the ball is round it wont give you the correct answer. One flaw is it won't lay flat on the ball very well, even if it is flexible, you'd need 3 hands to try and hold it flat at every important place to try and read it, but the angle it reads is based on a distance apart on the circumference of the protractor, but that gets distorted because of the roundness of the ball. If you were to draw 2 lines a 90 degree angle apart on a ball, and then try to lay the protractor down on the vertex of the 2 lines and then roll it down the ball to measure it, you wouldn't read it as a 90 degree angle, but something smaller than it. Measuring angles on a round surface is tricky. This is why on a bowling ball you can draw a triangle made of 3 90 degree angles, which wouldn't work on a piece of paper where the angles have to add up to 180 degrees.

I would not layout balls using a flexible protractor but since I am not a driller why would I?  I also need a do-do scale to check weights, etc. so layouts would be iffy at best.  When the lines are on the ball like this http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q29/scotts33/Bowling%20Equipment/Track916AT.jpg it's very easy and also as reliable as I checked with a ProSect vs. a flexible protractor and they read the same.

I agree with Scott here, I use a flexible protractor and it works pretty good for now since I don't have a Pro Sect either this will do for now. I can layout a ball in like less than 2 minutes

Good discussion and good feedback, thanks to all. I'm going to see if I can get within a hand grenade of accracy on the angles and will report back.
