New drilling Specs????????????
« on: September 02, 2008, 02:17:45 AM »
I was told by the temporary pro shop guy that there's a new reg from the USBC that say that you MUST keep the pin at least one inch away from the cut of the fingerholes.Any truth to this???????????
I was going to have him redrill a Cell I bought from a BR member with a pin under drilling and kick the Cg out 45 degrees, but if this is correct, that would put the pin almost in the center of the grip.
1.Is this rumor true??
2.What type of ball reaction would this give me in general??
3.Specs are in my profile.
Thanks in advance for all replies...............

Regarding question #1, I have heard manufacturers recommend that you should not have the pin closer than 1/2" or 1" from the cut of the finger holes due to the possibility of cracking. I have not heard of any pending USBC regs on this, though.

The ball reaction proposed might give you an earlier roll, but it will be somewhat dependent on the ball specs prior to drilling (pin distance, etc.).

Dan,
Thanks for the reply.I should have stated that in the OP.
 It's a 2 3/4" pin with 2 1/2 ounces of top weight.

I certainly hope not. yet another senseless and unjustifiable regulation, if it were true. I kind of doubt it.

Brunswick drill sheets state to keep any cut 1" from pin.
Storm likes 1/2 inch
Ebonite used to be 1/4 inch
"OLD" Columbia and Track 1/4 inch.

All measurements were for warranty concerns

On edit: Haven't heard anything from USBC about this.

I will have to get rid of a few balls then.  I like drilling with the pin all over the finger holes, in between the finger holes, drill out the pin.....

I doubt there is any truth to this, it would have been posted on here very quickly.

There is no USBC rule concerning how close to the pin, or drilling the pin out.

However, for warrenty issues, you should follow the instructions on the box or drilling instructions concerning how close to the pin (primary and mass bias/PSA) you can be and not void the warrenty.

I know, from my years at Brunswick, that you can drill the pin completely out of a Brunswick ball and not void the warrenty. Just make sure that you hit the center of the pin when drill it out so there is no pin left.

The drilling you mentioned, and just looking at your specs., the Cell drilled in the manner you described should give you a fairly even reaction with a strong, continuous backend. This ball is not designed to give you a big skid/snap reaction.

I hope all of this helps.

The USBC was going to set a rule stating that the CG Couldn't be more than 1" aways fron the grip center, but that never materialized. =:^D

i think, and i've seen on all the new ball boxes, as well as in a letter from Track that the ball cannot be sent back due to cracking if the pin is closer than one inch to the finger holes, it voids the warranty i believe
