A lot of it will depend on how much friction your lanes have.  While the patterns themselves are effectively the same, every house plays different.  Brand new synthetics won't give you as much early grab as old wood lanes, for example.  On newer synthetics, I had good success with balls drilled for length on Viper once the shot broke down a bit.  However, on fresh oil, they tended to be a little jumpy.  You will probably need to have some of your equipment slightly sanded (hit it with some 1500-2000 abralon maybe) and some of your equipment slightly polished.  The heads can get pretty dry on Viper and you can open the lanes up, but on fresh you're going to want a little more of a direct line and a little more of an arc than a skid/snap reaction in my opinion.

I wouldn't necessarily have all pin up's for flatter patterns, but if that's what you have, I'd scuff one or two so you have something that reads the lane a little earlier.  I have a PBA Experience post going in the miscellaneous forum that might be of some help.  Viper is one where I had lots of options.  In or out, hook or fairly straight all worked for me.  Like Dan said, between the lane and oil type, and quite a few other variables, there are no absolute answers.  Take a variety of stuff, play all parts of the lane, and keep the one that scores best.
