drilling of thumb hole

what would happen if you drilled the thumb hole off set ? you know the thumb is drilled  below and  between the fingers  what would happen if it was offset to the left(on righty) seems to me (i,m no driller) you could turn the ball better. about like  a  bowler throwing with no thumb .or would it even be legal, just courious  thanks J

When you "offset" the thumb all you are really doing is changing the span length and varying the difference between the length of the span on the finger holes.

Yeah, this "offset" drill is nothing more than just changing spans.  There isnt anything special about it.

As the others have said...if you plug an existing thumb and then offset it you will change spans.

However, if you offsett the thumb in a new ball and drill your finger holes according to your regular cut-to-cut measurements all you really do is change pitches.

If you are trying to get out of the ball with your thumb faster there are a couple of things you can do without using an offset thumb. if you are right handed you can start increasing your lateral left pitch. increase by 1/8 inch and keep trying until it gets to the point where you feel you have to grab or squeeze the ball to hang on. then back it off 1/16 to 1/8 to where it was earlier.

another method to induce the thumb to come out cleaner or faster would be to fool around with bevel. the more you bevel the sooner the ball will release itself. there comes a point in bevel as well where you start grabbing or holding onto the ball and that causes problems.

not a big fan of off set unless the person has physical problems with their hand and or thumb. the offset can then be used as comfort fit for the physical problem. some people like the off set where as in most cases it is not necessary to do an off set thumb.

if you do an extreme off set of 1/2 inch or more then the thumb will probably come out of the ball very quick.

grip should be snug enough where you do not have to grab the ball and yet comfortable enough where the ball can release itself from the hand. if you feel you are having a hard time getting your thumb out of the ball then it could be several factors causing this. you could have a longer thumb. you could have a wet / sweaty / moist hand. finger pitches are too severe. thumb is too loose and you grab it. you may knuckle your thumb inside the thumb hole. your span could be stretched which cause you to lock into the ball. the list goes on and on and is not just one simple answer. it could also be a release technique.

offset holes are really more relevant when drilling ovals...it is used not only to line up horizontal pitches but to line up the oval in the fingers and does not change span in the ring finger if done properly.  The rumor that an offset thumb is no more then turning the grip can only be true in round holes because your fingers can turn in a circle...If we were just turning the grip your fingers would be twisted in the oval which would be very uncomfortable.  We also use offsets to line up hole entry for the various flexibility of hands we see which makes it easier to place your hand in the ball.  For example someone with a loose jointed thumb; we will offset all in the thumb how much will depend on the length of the bone from the wrist to the joint at the base of the thumb...pitching the hole reversed and away from the palm.  Someone with very stiff joints in the thumb, we not only offset in the thumb but in the fingers as well creating easier hole entry for the stiff hand without have such an absurd change of lateral pitches...pitching the thumb hole reversed and to the palm and less lateral in the middle finger and more in the ring finger.  We will post diagrams in the near future that will make all of this easier to understand.  The problem with most people that drill bowling balls is that they don't understand how much control they have over what's in front of them.  Remember all of this pertains to the drilling of ovals there are certain parts of what we are doing that can make a ball drilled with round holes more comfortable...but never as comfortable as one with oval holes.

i tried an offset thumb hole and it seemed like it was hanging up alot.  so i had it plugged it put back to normal.

Theres a guy in my league with an offset thumb hole.  He looks like and tracks like a no-thumb bowler but with a little more accuracy.  He just has the tip of his thumb in the hole.

I was curious about this also. As it stands, none of the House balls I throw really fit me, so it's not rare for me to throw a few shots thumbless. However, I'm going to the pro shop tonight to get my own ball. When I visualize a comfortable fit it seems that the thumb hole would be slightly left of the middle finger hole (looking directly at holes).
