Raised Ring Finger
« on: July 25, 2004, 11:09:54 PM »
Hey Guys,
I know the Sarge Easter grip. But what exactly is the purpose of having your ring finger drilled .5" higher than your middle finger? Does this affect revs, or is this just a comfort drill on a particular ball? Saw a guy this weekend with an Animal and a Predator with this set-up, on each ball. Anyone know?

Jesse James -- Proper spans depend on the construction of the individual's hand.  Most people have spans with the ring finger span the same or slightly longer than the middle finger.  But occasionally I run into someone whose ring finger span is significantly longer than their middle finger.  I can't say that I've ever seen one a full half inch longer, but it's possible.  Another possibility is that the person has a damaged middle finger that requires a shorter than normal span.  Would have to see the hand to know why.  --  JohnP

If it was done intentionally to increase the pressure on the ring finger the net result (besides possible eventual pain) would be for them to throw less turn on the ball.

The ring finger is behind the ball and provides more lift than turn. By increasing the pressure on the ring finger it will do more work and thus they will go up the back of the ball more.

The middle finger is towards the outside of the ball and provides more turn.

As John P. stated when the span is setup with equal pressure on both fingertips the ring finger span is normally as longer or at least as long as the middle finger.

JohnP,
Look at my profile.
It is what you were talking about in reference to spans.
Mine is from an industrial injury. Even though the middle finger shorter it is still like a fingertip for me.

Glen -- Yep, that's it.  I assume your last ring finger joint is very stiff (1" rev).  Actually, other than the short MF span, your fit is very close to mine (4 11/16" on both spans, 1/4" rev on MF and 5/8 rev on RF, 7/16" rev and 1/4" L lateral on thumb).  Is your thumb stiff also?  Mine is, and if I don't have the extra rev pitch I have to drill the hole very large to be able to get out of it clean.  As another example, though, my father in law's grip has the RF span about 3/8" longer than the MF, and he does not have damage to his fingers (other than stiffness from having worked as a carpenter and plumber most of his life).  His RF is actually longer than his MF when you look at his hand.  --  JohnP

The ring finger isn't drilled higher it is drilled lower.
Finger tip on middle finger, conventional on ring.
It is used to reduce revs and axis rotation.
That is the reason Robert Smith uses it anyway.

John,
I do not have any stiffness of the thumb. The reverse in the thumb is for quick exit.
The 1" reverse on the RF has come about because of Tendonist a couple of years ago.
