How's my driller doing this?
« on: May 12, 2011, 03:04:59 AM »
I posted this on BowlingChat.net, also....
 Any ideas?

I just switched back to finger grips....from gripless.
I had my driller install grips, on 2 balls.
They were drilled to my specs (gripless).... I figured he would have to plug the fingers.
I dropped 2 balls at the proshop.... I was bowling league....
about 30 minutes, into league he walks down to my lanes with the balls, ready to roll....
Grips installed... no plugging, he enlarged the holes (somehow)...
installed the grips....no plugging....he has a standard drill press....
No milling attachment, that I know of.

Any ideas?

It's been on my mind the past few weeks....

Odds are he just measured your full span on the insert-less ball, and subtracted grip thickness to arrive at new cut measurements. Then drilled the holes. Pretty simple.

What got me thinking about it?
My past drillers would always re-plug and drill, under the same circumstances...
Thanks bowler001, it's starting to sink in. :)

Should be very common. If he went cut to cut and added inserts then span would be too long. So taking into consideration of the insert is the right thing to do. Some places forget that.

Be good, or be good at it.

I would think he did what the others here are suggesting.  Depending on the width of the bridge of your fingers, going from gripless to having grips is not all that hard to do if there's plenty of room.

Not really over complicating it....many shops won't do something like that without plugging the hole first.  Unless the new holes end up being centered on your existing holes, there is a chance the drill bit will want to wander into the existing hole, or that the bit will chip off some part of the ball.   Probably not an issue with newer drilling equipment.

Dan,
I should have asked you....
It never entered my mind, until I'd be moving the balls around, then I'd think about it.

I hope none of those are ebonite balls. Grips void warranties and lately ebonite has denied to replace a cracked bridge with grips in it.
