Whats the difference between,
« on: February 20, 2007, 05:37:44 AM »
the pin being below the bridge, above the bridge or even with the fingers, assuming all thing are equal? Lets say a ball is drilled 4 1/2 by 3 1/2, does the pin height/location have anything to do with the reaction of the ball?
Thanks

In theory, the higher pin will save a little more enrgy and give a later reaction down the lane. This is also dependent upon the bowlers axis rotation and tilt. I find that for my game a high pin is much more comfortable. I have drilled balls for people that didnt like the high pins. It's all personal preference.

Three things to consider with pin placement:

1.  Pin to PAP distance determines flare potential - 3-3/8" for max flare (with today's low rg core and high rev rates this is usually too much), 5" usually provides the strongest reaction for high rev bowlers.  Moving closer than 3-3/8" or further than 3-3/8" decreases flare potential.

2.  Pin Height - If even with the grips is the control variable, above the grips provides later roll, below the grips provides earlier roll.

3.  Pin buffer - the distance from the Perpendicular Axis Line, determines angularity of the ball motion: the closer to the PAL, the stronger the backend reaction.
