Vertical change of PAP?
« on: October 18, 2007, 03:19:58 PM »
I had my PAP re-measured today. MY PAP has always been 4-3/4, and 1" up.

I knew my ball roll had changed since I quit bowling the end of last year.

My PAP is now: 4-11/16; and 1/2" down...What would cause the vertical change?

TIA

Not getting your thumb out BEFORE turning the ball. Thumb and fingers are now, roughly exiting at the same time and fingers are still on the 9:00 side of 6:00 (for a righty; reverse for lefty) , while thumb is on the 3:00 side of 12:00.

Get the thumb out, THEN turn.

charlest,

Thanks...

I just drilled up a 14# Kinetic...Used a new driller, we changed my thumb pitches, from 1/2 reverse, lateral 1/8 away from palm...to 1/4 reverse, lateral 1/8 towards palm.

I noticed my thumb release had changed. I realized I was grabbing at the thumb lately...It was time to be refitted. Since I took the year off,I noticed my hand had shrunk quite a bit.

Driller did a great job, working with me.

I threw the ball about 15 times, and noticed a difference in the flare rings.
Track seems to be back to normal.

Thumb pitches can absolutely do that. MY "new" thumb pitches are extremely comfortable, more so than ever before (25 years worth!), YET I feel myself turning the ball, WITH MY THUMB STILL IN IT, to get out of it cleanly. I feel I must change the lateral pitches, to get out of it without excessive concentration about my physical traits. Time will tell.

Your new PAP indicates an inverted track, first track ring closer to the fingers than to the thumb.  If a different driller measured the PAP, and especially if it was done on a flaring ball, it could be as simple as a difference in the determination.  First, best way to measure the PAP is on a non-flaring ball such as a plastic spare ball, and no matter what method is used to confirm the location by taking the ball to the lanes and marking the PAP location with a piece of tape, which should remain stationary for the first couple of ball rotations.  If this wasn't done by both drillers, I suspect the accuracy of one or both of the determinations.  Secondly, a strong flaring ball makes the determination difficult.  The piece of tape has to be watched very closely as soon as the ball is released because the flare will begin within the first 5' of travel.  The bowler cannot see this, the observer has to watch it.  If the PAP was simply taken from the ball's track it's no better than an estimate.

At the Powerhouse two day seminar I attended last spring, I was told that the difference between an inverted and regular track was in which finger exited last.  I don't remember for sure, but I think Jeff said that if the MF exits last the track is inverted.  --  JohnP
