Help! Middle finger cut.
« on: November 25, 2006, 05:42:15 AM »
If I bowl more than a few games my middle finger develops a cut on the side. I use Contour Power Grips (1/4" forward pitched). My middle finger pitches are 1/4 forward; 3/8ths left. I know the 1/4 forward is unconventional these days, but I've tried reverse and zero but prefer the lift the forward pitch gives me. So, combined with the power grips theres alot of forward pitch going on.

Recently we went from 5/16ths left to the 3/8ths but I'm still cutting up. Is it the grips? The forward pitch? Even when I was at zero forward/reverse I would still cut up but as I recall it wasn't as bad as it is now.

Given the position of the cut, just below the knuckle, is this an issue of lengthening the span about a 16th so I don't go past that first knuckle?

This is really quite painful. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Grips might be a little loose, and possibly sharp.

I used to have this problem, and the quick fix was going up in size on the inserts and using Vise Bio Skin to wrap my fingers.

1/4 Forward could be the issue, and also, I would suggest going from 3/8th to 1/4 left. That will alleviate a little strain on that side of the finger.

The thing is I did increase the finger hole size and it actually made the problem worse because then I dig in just a tad deeper and, well, you can see the result in the pic.

Thanks for your suggestions though. I use to be at 1/4 left but that was about 3 years ago.....didn't cut up as bad come to think of it.

I do agree that the inserts can be sharp despite their "super soft" title. Might be time to experiment with some different grips (just always lke the feel of the power grips.....until they start cutting me up...LOL).

I think you're putting your fingers too deep in the holes.  You don't want to go deeper than the joint.  I teach people to put their fingers into the holes to the joint and then to put the thumb in.  Try that for a while and don't go deeper than the joint.  --  JohnP
