Wrist brace & span measurement
« on: August 19, 2008, 02:26:54 AM »
I wear a wrist brace but have never been asked to wear it when getting measured up for a new ball. Should I insist that I wear it when I get my next ball? If so how much difference would there generally be between what I have without my brace and what it would be when wearing it?

Just in case it matters its a Z-Loc 2 that I wear.

I would have got away with it if it was not for those pesky kids (Behind my lane) and those blasted 10 pins.

I wore a brace for pretty much my entire career.Last year I started experimenting without one and finally put it away for good.I had a ball redrilled after I stopped using the brace and saw no difference in span measurements.
It did change my PAP,which I'm sure you're aware is very important in setting up a ball for drilling. If you do decide to stop using the brace, let your driller know so you can get your new PAP measurement and then decide on how to redrill your equipment.

If you where a wrist brace you need to be measured with it on. Depending on the style a person where's it could be up to 5/16" difference in span length from wrist braces I have measured people with in the past. So it not only could effect span length but thumb ptich as well.

I agree with Rick.  I wear a Striker and thumb hole is smaller.  Span changes also.

Get measured with it on. For most the span will be shorter with the brace on.

How does wearing a wrist brace change the size of your hand.

I can understand how wearing some braces can cause a bit of tension in your hand. And that tension can cause release issues. I would be more inclined to think SOME wrist braces cause more problems than they solve

It depends on the type of brace used, but why take a chance? If you wear one to bowl then it's good to get checked. I use a Mongoose Equalizer sometimes and it doesn't effect my span at all.

However, some of the adjustable braces (like the Storm Gadget, for example) change how your hand comes out of the ball. If you're stretched, then you'll likely have an even more difficult time getting out of the ball cleanly.

Depending on the type of wrist brace, say like the older style Robby's that has a thicke strap that goes acrros the palm of the hand. Well this will raise the ball of the palm causign the span to stretch slighlty. Also with that style if the bolwer is using the metal wrist plate they have in them that will also lift the ball off the hand even further.

I personally don't like wrist braces for todays modern game. What I mean by this is that a wrist brace hold you in a locked poistion through out your swing causing you to hit up on the ball. With todays equipment it is all about allowing the ball to roll out of your hand and not hit up on it.

Look at Chris Barnes's release and you will see excatly what I mean. He has in my opinion one of the best releases I have ever seen. Another one is Kevin Croucher. He is a new senior PBA Player. He won a PBA Senior event last year. and was also names to the All-American Team.
