Hooligan
By: Bryan Bannach DV8 Regional Staff Member
DV8 describes the Hooligan as a ball that “Finished with a Royal Shine Polish, the Hooligan projects easily through the front and mid-lane, with a quick response on the backend producing a very strong skid/flip motion that drives through the pins on medium dry to medium oily lane conditions.”
I drilled my Hooligan with a layout of 50x5x45 which is my standard pin up layout for symmetric equipment.  It gives me a controllable mid-lane motion with a quicker response to friction.
The angle the Hooligan creates on the backend is something very special.  I don’t think anyone will be able to watch this ball and claim that “Brunswick Brand” balls roll early and smooth anymore.  This is by far the most angular ball I have seen from DV8 yet.
On a medium volume house shot the Hooligan flies down the lane.  It almost looks like it is going to squirt too far but the minute it sees friction it makes a very quick move.  It surprised me the first time I threw it.  The biggest thing that I am impressed with out of the Hooligan is the fact that it rolls through the 8 pin from almost every angle.  It never seems to quit when going through the pins.
The Hooligan is going to be a great ball for anyone.  It can handle multiple different patterns, angles, and styles of play.  At this price point I don’t know if there will be any better value for your dollar on the market.

I drilled My Holligan with the pin under the Middle Finger, Cg  over the thumb. I love this layout it gives me a smooth motion down lane. I have this same layout in my Fav the Too Reckless. Hooligan being it is Pearl goes a lot longer and really smooth. I have so far mostly thrown this on House Patterns, from 38-41 ft and am very impressed with the carry and how clean it is even with burnt heads.

The Hooligan is a ball that is designed to provide excellent length through the front of the lane with a strong move off of friction.  I drilled my Hooligan 60x4.75x45 (pin over ring) with the intent of having a ball that I could use to stay further right and softer with my hand.
My initial experience was on a fairly heavy, long pattern (44' High Street) and unless the Hooligan saw friction early, it was going 60' straight.  As bad as that sounds, I was happy to see that, proving to me that the Hooligan really was as long as advertised.  I hit the ball with a light 4000 to kill some of the polish and brought it the next night to an older house with 20+ year old synthetics that dresses 39' Middle Road as their house pattern and shot 750.  I was able to play right of third arrow (which is nosebleed territory for me) as I have previously been starting league left of 4th arrow my Thug, Schizo or Pearl Diva.

As far as reaction shape, the Hooligan slides as long down the lane as any other ball in my bag with a hard arc off of the friction.  It has replaced the Misfit Yellow Pearl in my bag and is much easier to control down the lane.  As much as I like seeing my Yellow Misfit go long and sideways, it is just too sensitive to wet/dry to generate consistent ball reaction to control the pocket for optimal pin carry.  The Hooligan gives me that extra little bit of consistency that the Misfit was unable to offer me along with that more angular backend motion that I could not generate out of the Dude.

I would recommend this ball to anybody looking to square up their angles, particularly on worn lane surfaces.

COMMENTS

I was excited to hear that DV8 was releasing a ball at a new price point between the Diva/Dudes and the Outcast/Misfit lines. I drilled my Hooligan 70/4.5/35, which is pin over ring finger and the cg on the grip midline. I first tried this ball on our left over house shot. . . I wasn't surprised at how clean this ball got down the lane but, by how much more controllable it was. I expected this ball to go side ways as soon as it encountered friction.  Instead of being a complete skid/snap, I know we seem to hear this all the time but, it was predictable motion to the pocket. With the 500/Royal Compound/Royal Shine finish . . . you get the length and hook you want, without the aggressive, uncontrollable flip on the back end. With that being said, I was curious how the ball would react with a surface change. I took the ball to the shop and hit it with 500/2000 siaair finish. The, now sanded, Hooligan still got through the heads clean but dug in the mid lane about a foot or so sooner with a much more pronounced backend reaction. I was really able to open up the lane without fear it would wiggle down lane. Personally, I think DV8 knocked this one out of the park! This ball bridges the gap between the Diva/Dude and Outcast/Misfit line perfectly. Great ball at a new mid price point with great shelf appeal.

MY Name is Doug and I am a Left hander and I throw the ball around 15mph. I am on DV8 Regional Staff.

When DV8 brought the Hooligan out I was really happy that you get a ball that really skids through the heads really clean and hits really hard and for the price you will not go wrong.  The price is fantastic you are getting a ball reaction that you will have to spend around $190.00 for and you will spend much less for this ball.

I drilled my first Hooligan with the Pin below my Ring Finger and the cg kicked out. The Pin is 2-3".  I hit the surface with a light 4000 pad and I really love this ball.

I used this on multiple lanes conditions but the one that I am going to do this review is on USBC White Pattern.  With this drill pattern it allows me to stay square and play 10 and left and this is where I like to play. We are bowling on really used wood lanes and the pattern I need the ball to clear the heads well and need some on the back and this ball gives me that. I have not shot under 740 the last 5 weeks. I have also used this on Route 66, and also the PBA Cheetah. On t

I would not recommend the ball on really long pattern because you need the ball to read early or a dull bull this ball does not work well.

I would really recommend this ball to people that want to keep squared up and  a really clean ball, and like I said early the price of the ball is fantastic.  I am going to drill another one with the pin above my fingers.

I want to thank Brunswick and DV8 for bringing out another Fantastic Ball.  Brunswick brands I think have the greatest balls on the market.

The DV8 Hooligan is ball that gives a bowler great controllable mid-lane motion on various types of patterns.

The ball rolls very smoothly and controllable through the front parts of the lanes.  I have used this ball better on medium volume lane conditions.  The Hooligan responds very well to friction, making the ball move very quickly down the lanes.

The Hooligan is the ball that you want to go to when you need to open the lanes up and move in deeper on the lanes.   It can be thrown from multiple angels and used on various oil patterns.  This ball is better on a medium condition and provides better movement to the pocket.  League and Tournament Bowlers will see that this ball is a great go-to ball when you want to open the lanes up a bit.  If you don’t have one, you better ask someone….DV8….GET ONE NOW!

DV8 Hooligan

Ball is drilled 45X4 ¾”X30  1000 Abralon With Polish                      Tested on House Pattern

This is a great ball when the lanes start to breakdown and the lanes force you left.  I find this ball is very clean through the front part of the lanes, and even when the head start to get choppy it seems like it still skids through without checking early.  I find for me with this ball it worked better when the lanes would transition and I had friction to the right.  It allowed me to get in on the lane and get my hand around the ball, and just throw it to the friction. I had changed the Box finish to accomadate with my arsenal of balls.  That is the great thing about balls these days.  The covers are very easy to manipulate and change to your desires and what you are looking in terms of reaction and the shape that bowlers want to see.  I have a 2nd Hooligan as well that I will review when I get it drilled.  For the bowlers with low rev rates and need a ball to skid further down the lane, this is a ball you should drill as it has very easy length with great finish in the back.  For the higher rev bowlers, a great ball for when the lanes start to burn out and you need that easy length through the front part of the lane.  Most likely with the higher rev players you will want to take the surface up to 4000. Again with these balls they look great going down the lanes with the colours that they have on them.  It catches the eyes of a lot of people that I have noticed.

Thank you DV8, Brunswick, Radical for giving me the opportunity to represent your Company

Hooligan - Noun
   A violent young trouble maker.

The name explains itself. It's not about walking in quietly, tying your shoes neatly, and sitting down after your frame. It's about kickin the door open, unloadin the hooligan down the lane, and tossin the headpin around like a rag doll. There is nothing sweet and sassy about this ball. It's overflowing with violence and looking for trouble. It's so clean thru the front and angular in the back that I went from the occasional ringing corner pin, to a very infrequent 9 pin. I find myself using it after a game or two when I start losing that pop down lane or when there are quite a few games in and the lanes are just hooking. No matter the situation, the hooligan is without a doubt, a fine young troublemaker.

COMMENTS

The Hooligan is a very sharp looking ball.  The red/yellow pearlized cover looks great whenever any kind of light hits it.

Mine was drilled 65 x 4 3/4 x 35.  That is my standard symmetrical layout.  The Hooligan offers major length with a big-league backend move.  Don't be fooled and throw this one on heavy oil.  The long length is not for that.  When the lanes break down and the head oil starts to disappear, the Hooligan begins to do its magic.  It gets very far down the lane and makes one of the hardest turns on the backend that iIve ever seen.  On sport shots, let the lanes break down before you pull out the Hooligan.  The hard response to friction can make it hard to control when the lanes are fresh.

The Hooligan has similar length to the Outcast, but makes a much harder turn on the backend. The Dude is a little stronger in the midlane, and the Diva Pearl has a similar ball motion with more overall hook.

This ball is great for all styles on dryer lanes!

LANE CONDITION

Length: 41'

Volume: 24ml

Type (THS, Sport Pattern etc): THS

COMMENTS

Likes: The one thing that really stood out to me with this ball was the versatility it gave me on light to medium oil patterns. Although this ball does not like oil (not suppose to though) it will give medium rev, medium speed bowlers multiple angles on light to medium oil. With a pin down layout I can see this ball being used on short patterns as it easily goes through the heads with a smooth transition down lane. I may take some surface to this ball depending on the house and pattern just to control the down lane motion even more. This ball reacts very nicely to surface changes on your typical house pattern. Taking surface to this and any ball in the DV8 line up will result in a completely different ball motion helping to make this ball very versatile for the conditions it was made to handle.

Dislikes: Not a single one, it does as advertised.

The opinions above are those of the author not of the Brunswick Corporation.

If you are looking for length and hard angle, the Hooligan is for you. The ball Skids easily through the front of the lane, and makes a very sharp and late turn towards the pocket. I have mine drilled with the pin 1.5 inches above my ring finger, but the ball will still easily get through the front if you would like to drill it pin under for a slightly smoother result. This ball plays best on medium to light oil. It pushes extremely hard through the pins and rarely leaves anything in its way. This is another awesome DV8 release with a great price!
