Title: 1500 vs. Rough Buff at Nationals
Post by: prmtme on May 12, 2013, 04:15:26 PM
How different are these 2 surfaces? I have a Lucid at 4000 that I am going to use in the beginning then I will change to either Brutal or a Reckless which are both at RB. I want to change 1 to 4000 to compliment the Lucid but I don't which one yet. I would like to here what you guys think that might have bowled already. I also have a Maurauder to use later in the sets.

From what i've heard from talking to people that have bowled, 2000 seems to be the ideal surface for the fresh.  You might wanna consider that instead of 4000.

Ruff buff has a polishing agent in it and would not recommend anything shiny for nationals. There's so much volume in the fronts as well as a higher viscosity oil that even when they break down, you still need surface

If you apply a good dose of Rough Buff over a 500 grit surface, you'll wind up with something in the neighbor hood of 3000 - 4000 grit and the appearance will be a matte or dull look.

If you apply a good dose over 1500 grit, you will wind up with what appears to be a polished surface.

Rough Buff has a very aggressive abrasive in it that smooths out surface very fiercely, but the surface you get depends a lot on the human factor: how much you apply, how hard you press and for how long (assuming you do it on a spinner). It will provide very different results if you do it by hand.

I just posted a topic called "just returned from Reno" you may want to look at.  I had an Enigma at 2000 that wasnt enough surface for team event.  It would not read the pattern at all and would not bleed off any energy before getting to the backend.  Here is what I would do if I was you:

Take your Brutal to 1000 abralon, Reckless to 2000, and leave the Lucid at 4000.  THEN......for minors, I would take the Reckless and add polish to it, even if it is rough buff.  Since you dont change lanes after doubles, by the time the second game of singles rolls around, you will want something to help push down the lane because our track area was pretty fried up by the end of doubles.
