Brutal Nightmare vs Sync
« on: April 09, 2013, 12:51:42 AM »
Trying to decide which ball to buy... but really stuck and the only thing moving me toward Sync is that it's scented and I've never bought DV8 yet.

I've read some reviews on different forums and online stores, most say Brutal has a lot of backend and tremendous hook while Sync is smooth and has great backend too.

Currently using VG Nano with Pin ABOVE in BETWEEN the 2 fingers and WANT a DIFFERENT layout.

Should I expect much change if I drill Sync/Brutal with 4x4x1(Storm's PSA Layout) compared to VG Nano?

i had a nano and never liked it.  drilled a sync 4-4-2 pin slightly above and right of my ring.  and love this ball.  rolls great through the front then makes a nice strong finish at the end and crushes the pins.

The Brutal Nightmare is a strong ball with a lot of back end. The BN gets  through the front and reads the mid lane very very nice.  It has a strong continuation through the 8 pin that never ever quits.   The Sync will be a lot smoother but not as strong as the BN.    The Brutal Nightmare is a must have in your arsenal . You won't regret buying the Brutal Night Mare

Thank you both for your inputs.

jrs - Was your Nano layout the same as your new Sync?

BubbaRay - I'm new to some bowling terms, didn't quite understand about "read mid lane very well"? Does it mean like the ball will pick up friction well in midlane? Because my Nano doesn't seem to pick up friction till VERY late and has no carry.

Yes lazyk. The Diva will start to read the pattern earlier. It has a smooth roll into the pocket with a strong controlable hook.

Ah, I think I understand about that now. I've been wanting to have 1 Angular ball and 1 smooth arc. So would that make sense to get Brutal Nightmare and Diva to suit that? or is there a smoother ball than diva with a strong hook?

I kind of think that the Brutal Nightmare and Sync are not the balls to be comparing on what to buy. The Brutal Nightmare does not appear to be DV8's strong ball, where the Sync is Storm's. If you want a more skid snap reaction, Brutal Nightmare will be the choice of the 2, but if you are looking for a ball with strength the Brutal Nightmare honestly doesn't look like enough cover even after adding surface. Bowled on a 45 ft 5 to 1 pattern this past second half of league, one bowler has both balls. He would start with the Sync, then switch to either his Brutal Nightmare or Lucid after the lanes began to transition. A good comparison between the 2 companies would be Sync to Nightmare and Brutal Nightmare to Lucid. Sync and Nightmare being the top in strength from both companies creating early and smoother ball motions. Brutal Nightmare and Lucid being the step down, skid snap type of reaction.

The Brutal Nightmare like most dv8 balls goes long....but its quick off the friction. I have the Hell raiser terror, my teammate the BN and another has the sync...All are strong balls but I see the sync getting into a roll earlier then the DV8's.

I wasnt a big fan of the Brutal I had...I didnt find it very versatile, it needed oil upfront or it labored badly on the back end, but didnt handle heavy very well.. I like the Nightmare much better on the DV8 side. Over all I agree with imholte8, they are not the balls to be comparing. The Sync is a strong rolling heavy oil ball, similar in strength to my nano but much smoother. I find the Nano hard to use until I find the right amount of oil, but when I do, the ball is money. I would assume the sync would be the same. Ive also thrown the Lucid and own a Defiant Soul, keep in mind I owned a Brutal also. If I was recommending anything, The Soul is a GREAT ball. I use it on heavier THS and have thrown it on some heavier flat patterns and it just damn good. It reads the mids real well and has strong continuation on the back. It handles oil well and in heavier oil it is about 2-4 weaker than my Nano, but much much more versatile. I also liked the Lucid which in my hands was similar to the Deep Purple Taboo I had at the time, liked both of them a lot, but the Soul is whats still in my bag....

I think I am leaning more towards the Sync than Brutal Nightmare as I'm looking for a more smooth and earlier roll.

Does anyone know how Sync fares in Medium oil conditions? Still a strong ball or burns out midlane?

Before dropping to 14# balls, I had the Nano Solid with Pin over RF and slighted the bridge with the CG kicked out approx 1". I polished this ball and it was a monster being playable on a large variety of conditions. It was the first ball out of my bag before selling it becuse I dropped in weight and switched to Brunswick.

I had the nano and other storm equipment and to me the balls are great for the 1st 20 games then just die.  I started off using DV8 this year(BN/TooReckless) and to me is a way superior ball.  DV8 balls hit just as good as any storm i've thrown and last way longer.

Lazy,

The Nightmare is more of a medium to medium-heavy oil ball for your ball speed, with a strong backend. The Sync will be more of a medium-heavy to heavy oil ball with less backend and more control and evenness, because it is so strong. Be ware of its super strong Mass Bias when drilling. That limits the effective range of positioning to get the desired ball reaction.

I've heard some experts say that any MB/PSA strength over ~.017 is wasted. I know it limits the positioning of the PSA and the driller has to be significantly more accurate for most people.
