New Arsenal Motiv vs DV8
« on: June 29, 2014, 12:35:44 PM »
Hi all,

I just started getting serious about my game after about a 15 layoff. I was steered into Motiv equipment by my pro shop and have been generally happy with it. Just heard about DV8 from friends of friends on Facebook.

How does DV8 compare.

17.5-18 mph. 325-350 revs I can have the tendency to throw the ball through the break point if it doesn't have enough cover. House shot average 220 roughly.

I currently have.

Primal Rage. Drilled for medium length
Hammer Amp drilled to go long
Primal TV4 Pin up and just right of the fingers
Toxic Venom Pin just below the ring finger
Sigma, I don't like it lots of corner pins.
A few other mid range balls.

Sorry I'm not up on all the new tech talk.

I have a Zero Gravity and a Venom After Shock coming?

I haven't thrown a Brunswick I liked, since the Gold Rhino Pearl. DV8 looks like it has some interesting new stuff.

Thoughts opinions?? PS where I live it's almost all Storm/Roto and Columbia.

Thanks John

Having just picked up my first 2 Motiv balls recently, I can say that they're impressive.  In my case, the Covert Revolt gives me that ball which rolls heavy in back while giving me nice control on medium-heavy patterns.  The Sigma Sting for a pearl cover really surprised me at how good of a benchmark ball it is.  That ball reminds me more of my Storm Hy-Road in versatility, except it's cleaner up front, reads the mids well, and is slightly stronger on the back.  It's also a better version of their original Sigma as it has an improved cover.

Now, I have not thrown DV8 but there are people in my league that do.  From what I've seen, DV8 tends to be more skid/flip compared to being more of a heavy roll type of ball that Brunswick had been known for a long time.  But, now that DV8 has more balls available compared to a few years ago, they have become more versatile and you can build an arsenal that covers a variety of reaction shapes.

My opnion is that currently Motiv overall seems to have more of the bases covered in terms of reaction shape and core dynamics.  If you want true skid/flip, a combo of length and backend, or something that rolls early, it could be easier to build an arsenal from them.   However, both brands make good equipment and I think you would do well either way.

I throw a Brunswick Mastermind OOB, Motiv Primal Rage OOB, and the DV8 Misfit Peal (2000+polish.) All three I would say are the best balls I have ever throw. The Mastermind is the least versatile due to how crazy strong it is, but when there is enough oil to warrant its use, but has a beautiful strong and smooth reaction and hits like a broke pimp. I think it is a ball that is putting Brunswick back on the map. As for the Primal Rage, it is amazing in every way. The Misfit Pearl is a gem in burnt lanes with the surface I have on it. It gets through the heads, with a hard arc down lane and kills the pins. Motiv and DV8 have a lot going right, and Brunswick is coming back around lately. I would suggest any of these three brands to a teammate, but I would put Brunswick in second to DV8 and Motiv, who would tie in my mind.

Thanks for the input.
I added a Hyper Cell. a Venom Shock and an Ascent today. I'm pretty happy with the reactions I got out of all of them.
More hook out of the Venom(box finish 4000) than I thought I would get. Only about 2 and 1 less than the Hyper Cell on the house shot(Kegal white pattern I think). I was able to move in with the Venom and the hyper cell. The venom got over under  when the center carried down. I was able to go deeper with the hyper(pin under ring finger) or out 8 and 3 with the Ascent and have a nice reaction with both and still have a lot of hit on the pin deck.
For as straight as it goes the Ascent has a lot of hit.

It's nice having some new toys.

After yesterday's announcement, I don't know if I'd get too attached to Brunswick/DV8.

Sad, too, they're putting out some really good stuff.
Where are all my 2001-2006 posts?
