Title: How should I drill by Brutal Nightmare? Pin up or down?
Post by: bowlman23456 on March 28, 2013, 09:24:53 PM
Just got my Brutal Nightmare with a 2-3" pin.  I'm a 220 average bowler, with a high track, low to medium revs.  I'm looking to get the ball to get length, and have an explosive backend.

Should I drill it pin up or down?

I'd go pin up in that case. Maybe 4 - 4.5" off your PAP should be good. It gets through the heads easily. If the pin is closer to 2" you may need to go pin down though...

It is closer to 2".  Will I not be able to get the explosive backend with a 2" PIN?

My ball speed is pretty high around 17-17.5MPH, and I'm not a cranker.  Like I mentioned, I'm a low to medium rev player.  My typical line is 13 to 6 when at my A game, although that completely depends on the conditions.  I currently have an IQ Tour Pearl which I like, but I want the ball to bite more on the backend, especially in carry down.

I really don't see the brutal being more explosive on the backend than the IQ tour pearl. I recently got a brutal nightmare with a 1 1/2" pin (which is fine, I wanted it to be pin down and be my sport pattern, smooth the pattern out ball) and this ball is FREAKISHLY strong. I have attempted to throw it on a house shot, and it just wiggles all the way down lane, unless I am way left and keep the ball in the oil.

I have seen a few guys in my league that are like you, little more speed than revs, and they have their pins in various spots, but none of them have a huge backend. This ball is just so strong that it reads the lane a little too much to have that nike swoosh style hook.

Great piece of equipment, but hard to get it to boomerang unless youve got some tilt and a lot of hand (from what I have seen)

+1.....needs a ton of oil or it labors....thats what i saw with mine when I had it. I personally couldnt get through a half of game on our medium oil 42 ft condition with out it burning up and laboring. I am high tilt (26 degrees), 17 mph off of hand, 60 rotation and 325-350 revs....it was too strong for me. Mine was pin down, 2 inch pin, 45x4.25x65

With your speed and lower revs pin down will be better. Thanks for the additional info.

I drilled one for my son, and needed to tweak the cover by knocking the shine off a bit.  Then the ball came alive.

I don't necessarily need it to be a boomerang, but I wanted something that can bite through the oil more.  I bowl in a 2nd shift scratch league, and the issue I have is my IQTP squirts through the breakpoint without picking up midlane roll.  I wanted something that could handle the oil better and still move through it.

Would that be something I'd use pin down?  Sorry, I'm trying to hook up with pro shop guy so he can teach me more about layouts and how to set a ball up better, but for now, I yield to you experts.

My Brutal has a 2-3" pin also and I have mine drilled with the pin under my bridge (5" to pap) and the ball rolls great for me.

I'm a tweener but many times already I have used my Brutal to play up the boards and it was devastating  8)

Also, I can spray the lanes when the shot is there. I find the Brutal very usable on many different patterns so dont be afraid to try either way of drill patterns.

Btw, you said that your "...IQTP squirts through the breakpoint without picking up midlane roll..."  the IQTP is a pearl and the Brutal cover is a very aggressive hybrid, good luck with your ball.

Actually I was thinking a weaker layout to store some energy. My only question is why did you pick up a brutal nightmare over the defiant soul?

I drilled a 3-1/2" brutal and it hooks the same on the back as a tour pearl I have drilled. Difference is brutal is a lot cleaner thru the lane than the tour pearl.
